Femster68 0 #3 Posted September 27, 2014 problem i have is the serial number doesnt match up to anything on the list-now what do i do????? Unless it was a european model exported to Australia- maybe that is why i am having troubles finding it?????
Don1977 605 #4 Posted September 27, 2014 Welcome to Are you sure the engine is turning when you tried to jump start it. Some of those Briggs engines had a plastic gear on the starter. They wear out and the starter spins free not turning the engine. I've had to replace one on my mower.
Femster68 0 #5 Posted September 27, 2014 yes we are sure.Hubby is saying maybe the engine is just worn out. Hubby said definately turning the motor and its a new gear onit
Don1977 605 #6 Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) That my guess too. The old flat head Briggs engines sometimes the valves would stick if it had been sitting a while, but that's an overhead valve engine it shouldn't have that problem. rmaynard 16,292 #8 Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) Since all the manuals from Toro for the 14-38 are free to download, I would just download one or two of them to see if they may have something to help you. Edited September 27, 2014 by rmaynard
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,471 #9 Posted September 27, 2014 The 1998 model 71219 was the only 14-38HXL to use the B&S 28N777-1174-E1 engine. Tractor service manual Transmission service manual Wiring We don'y have the engine manuals and that sounds like what you need. Garry
Femster68 0 #10 Posted September 27, 2014 thanks for all of your help. I am getting somewhere. Found a link to motor parts in a parts catalogue that confirmed it was a 71219. I cant rememebr how i found it- i had to go right through it and search. IF i find a engine manual somewhere i will upload it through this post.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,471 #11 Posted September 27, 2014 Valve clearance is critical on these engines. Garry
