K181 smokes....bad.

I really enjoyed the misquito control when I mowed with my '66 WH 856 this summer but I think it has to stop.  Before I bust this thing open, any tips or tricks or usual things to look for?  I recently purchased a new (!) lawn tractor for mowing duties so I can afford the downtime for my WH.  But, I still want to plow snow with it.

BTW.....Did I mention it smokes BAD?

The K181 on my 857 smoked like a chimney. I pulled the piston and measured the ring gaps and had over 1/4" gaps. I honed the cylinder and installed new rings and the smoking stopped.  However, that's not to say that that would be the problem with your, but it is a starting point.

There are alot of times rings will fix the problem.

If the engine also has a slight knock, it is best to do it all while your in there.

Runs like a watch but just smokes.  I plan on new rings but will completely overhaul it if need be.  Thanks, guys.

I would say one thing to not over look is the valves if it is smoking as bad as you say the valves are going to be caked with carbon I would say at the least take them out and inspect them and clean them up the cheap eBay kits come with new ones

I always recommend a new rod any time you replace rings or piston. The extra stress on the old rod can cause it to break.
