MaineDad 87 #1 Posted October 10, 2008 Last week I ran the C-160 to mow the lawn and all is well. Still had a small tranny leak so I added some more oil up to the full level. I went to use it last night and now it just whines really loud when I move the lever. Off with the belt guard and seat to look things over. Noticed the leak looks to be coming from the pump housing, the large finned aluminum piece. I already have a new gasket for it so I decided to remove it to change the gasket. We'll see if that does the trick. However, I do worry that the the valve plate in the actual pump has come loose. That would mean I would need to order more gaskets etc! I like these hydros for cutting mowing time, but I'm not liking the maintenance :banghead:
Docwheelhorse 2,740 #2 Posted October 10, 2008 Thw whine sounds like the leak reallly opened up and that the pump cavitated (sucked air) hopefully you didn;t run it too long as that will kill a hydraulic pump real fast. I too like the hydros for specific things (snow blowing....) but don't like the maintenance or the neck snap I get every time I change direction mowing... MaineDad 87 #3 Posted October 10, 2008 I ran it maybe for one minute. It would move then stop, then move then stop and finally just stopped. I shut it down imeediately and pushed her back into the garage.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,602 #4 Posted October 10, 2008 Micah, Sorry to hear this. I thought you had this thing fixed when you replaced the gaskets, etc. It sounds like the problem is a little more difficult than you were hoping for. I wish I could help you out, but I'm not proficient enough in hydraulics. Sorry. :banghead:
MaineDad 87 #5 Posted October 10, 2008 Update: I pulled the tranny and installed a new gasket on the pump housing. I scraped the old gasket really well and it was very evident that it was leaking at the bottom. Put it back together and filled her up with new oil and replaced the oil filter. Started it up and she ran fine again. No whine at all and moved nice and smooth even at low idle. Tomorrow I'll run it around a while, before I put the seat and fender back on, to see if there is any leaks. Go figure - The oil filter was damn near impossible to remove. Not sure why or if that was the problem. I'll let you know...
