motox25 36 #1 Posted September 7, 2014 I took the PTO bell off my 520H today to paint it and noticed some residual grease on the PTO shaft. Is it best to wipe away the old grease and dirt and apply new grease or wipe it clean and run it dry?
Geno 1,929 #2 Posted September 7, 2014 Don't run it dry for sure. I use high temp wheel bearing grease on those.

gsummers 236 #4 Posted September 7, 2014 Yep, keep grease in that thing, when I restored my 312H this spring I lubed mine up also with wheel bearing grease.
JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,498 #5 Posted September 7, 2014 If you dont grease it. Expect eventual problems. Glenn
Trouty56 567 #6 Posted September 7, 2014 (edited) Pack the bearing inside the pto bell and just skim coat the race ....there is a seal that keeps the grease in there....if you apply too much grease to the polished race the seal will just push it towards the clutch plate and then spin it out on the pad..... I was just clarifying this for the OP.... Edited September 7, 2014 by Trouty56
motox25 36 #7 Posted September 8, 2014 Good deal, thanks for the info. The reason I ask is the manual doesn't mention greasing the PTO at all which I found odd.
tunahead72 2,543 #8 Posted September 8, 2014 Funny you should mention that. Many moons ago, in an earlier version of RedSquare, there was a thread titled roughly "Maintenance Items Not Found in the Manual". That particular thread was lost during one of the conversions to the current forum, but greasing the PTO was one of the items listed there. It's still a good idea. Molon_Labe 731 #9 Posted September 8, 2014 Every time I pull a PTO I grease it lightly with wheel bearing grease (my Dad called it "cup grease". First thing it's wiped out with paper towels and then lubed lightly with high temp wheel bearing grease.
