ALUMINUM BLOCK THUMBS UP OR DOWN

Recommended Posts

grinchsr

I just picked up a 1998 312-8 with the CH motor with 407 hours on it and was looking for opinions from the experts.  What can I expect from this motor?  Also what was the first year for the aluminum block?

If kohler command / command pro, and the maint is kept up, it will last a long time.  Even longer than a K series if the maint is kept up.  It will not tolerate lack of oil changes, or being run low.

Should the engine get worn, and blow a rod, the engine is disposable unfortunately.  Even when worn and caught early, the parts are expensive.

The Command is a good motor. I'm happy with the CH-15 on my 2005. Like Fordiesel said, they will last a long time with proper maintenance. I believe 98 was the first year they used them.
