seat safety switch 310-8

I am putting together, after restoration, a 310-8. It is an 85 and I was missing the safety switch under the seat. Ordered one from Joe Hemi and installed it however it works in reverse. I was thinking maybe its a normally open switch rather than a normally closed switch. I took the identical switch off my 308-8 and same scenario. Once I engage the pto the engine runs, however when I push the safety switch button down with my thumb the tractor stalls. I have traced the wires and one orange wire connects to the #2 slot on the ignition switch and the other orange wire runs into the 15 amp fuse. Am I being stupid here?

Any advise on what to check next.

My guess is you have the wrong seat switch. The 308-8 has magneto ignition using 109328 seat switch and the 1985 310-8 has battery ignition using 106268 seat switch.

There may be another problem also.

 

The ignition switch gets it's power from the pto switch with the pto OFF.

 

Once the pto is ON the ignition switch gets it's power through the seat switch. That explains why the engine quits when you open the magneto style seat switch.

 

But why will it not run with the pto OFF?

Perhaps the pto switch is not sending power to the ignition switch via the tan wire when the pto is OFF

or

the ignition switch is not powering the ignition in the RUN position.

 

I may be missing something here and it will make sense on a clear day.
