rustyedge1 176 #1 Posted August 14, 2014 I scraped out a B-165 years ago and have these left ~ Think it was a 42" cut ~ Was wondering if they would fit a 48" deck? The center to center bolt holes are 2&1/4" All the decks now of mine are either 48" cut or 36" If I can't use them thinking about putting them on eBay ~ Any info appreciated ~
cleathumphrey 0 #2 Posted August 15, 2014 I recently rebuilt a 42" and a 48" deck and they used the same spindles but different pulleys (different diameters). Cleat
rustyedge1 176 #3 Posted August 16, 2014 Thanks Cleat ~ The 42" spindle shafts two have keyways ~ I wonder if the pulleys on my 48" will work on the 42" shafts ? Any body know if I could swap them out ?
cleat 7,260 #4 Posted August 16, 2014 My two decks 42 and 48 have no key ways at all. Pulleys are just a friction fit held on by the nuts and blades are the same way. Cleat
rustyedge1 176 #5 Posted August 16, 2014 Guess I should keep the 42" spindles for spares for my 48"s ~ My thinking is I can swap out the pulleys and make them work. Never hurts to have PARTS ~
groundhog47 347 #6 Posted August 16, 2014 (edited) Guess I should keep the 42" spindles for spares for my 48"s ~ My thinking is I can swap out the pulleys and make them work. Never hurts to have PARTS ~ The 42" and 48" have same "footprint", length, bottom snap ring. What differs is prod year basically. It appears they used the same housing during metric transition first, then changed to a separate housing which only differs it appears in bore depth for bearing as no seal used. You can intermix metric and standard (bearings same od" stand or metric id")(one totally sealed other seal ONLY on bottom of bottom bearing as long as you have the appropriate pulley(s) (3/4" keyed stan, 5/8" non keyed metric). Now the 42" outer pulley crosses to use on some 36" so you have some tradin' stuff. (Note the inner spacer tube is different length on metric vs. standard which permits cross from srandard to metric "guts" but not absolutely metric to srandard in all cases, only if transition). In manuals section rhere is a chart/manual that doesn't give dimensions but types. Once you see one of each it's clearer. I'll edit in the manual... admin for manual) Also I notice the one you have tape on has incorrect top washer, which is very thin unlike the BIG nut bottom shaft, only throws off cut height that a machinist could find though, dah! My friend pacer Bill milled down depth of metric housing hole to depth of standard and allowed me to have a full spare set standard. Later I came across a metric with bad guts (already full depth cut and made a forth). Edited August 16, 2014 by groundhog47
rustyedge1 176 #7 Posted August 17, 2014 Thanks but I just want to use the 42" on a 48" deck if possible ~
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,499 #8 Posted August 17, 2014 If your spindles have a pulley key and Nylock nut you can change that to use no key, a regular lock washer and a standard non-locking nut. Just make sure the pulley will freely spin on the shaft. The natural direction of rotation keeps the nut tight. An application of Never-seize on the shaft and pulley hub will make it much easier to take apart next time. Service bulletin Garry
