bell 11 #1 Posted October 4, 2008 I SCORED a pretty decent 855 today! It all started with this ad... "I have a 8Hp Cast Iron Kohler Engine that you can hear run. Its on a old wheel horse tractor. The wheel horse does have a mower deck and it works also but the tractor is a rust bucket. The Engine and starter Charger works great. If you want the whole thing you can have it or take the Engine off and leave the rest doesn't matter to me. Thank You." I was looking for a Kohler engine for my 633. Well, I found one... AND most of the parts I need for my 1045!!! Here she is... It came with a RM367 deck that is pretty rotten, but the spindles are nice and tight and the belts appear to be pretty new... I have a couple REALLY nice "shells" with worn out spindles...
bell 11 #2 Posted October 4, 2008 All for $75!!!! The ad said "o.b.o.", but I had NO PROBLEM giving him the full asking price. :USA:
CasualObserver 3,411 #3 Posted October 4, 2008 :banghead: Pays to read those whole ads sometimes! Nice save.. if he had taken the engine off, the rest of the tractor would probably have gone to the scrapyard!
bell 11 #4 Posted October 4, 2008 Pays to read those whole ads sometimes! Nice save.. if he had taken the engine off, the rest of the tractor would probably have gone to the scrapyard! You're absolutely right... It probably would have went for scrap. I thought it was soo cool... he hooked the jumper cables up (the battery is shot), thurned the key and the generator light came on! I hadn't seen one of those that actually work yet... He turned the key and it fired right up! The float bowl is leaking, but I'll give it a good cleanout tomorrow and see if I can't get it to stop leaking. :banghead:

Vinylguy 4,691 #6 Posted October 4, 2008 Your Pictures show the small red and white hood decals on this tractor and it has wood grain side badges. Can anyone tell me if this is how these tractors came from the dealer? Also it appears that the word CHARGER is silver or Grey with white outlines on the wood grain background. First one I have seen like that. Nice find by the way. Just trying to learn more about what decals were used on certain years and models.
linen beige 15 #7 Posted October 4, 2008 Nice find! T.D., I'm sure you know, but that Charger badge doesn't belong on this tractor. And I'd be willing to bet that the lettering in the word Charger was originally black.
Rollerman 290 #8 Posted October 4, 2008 Jon nice find there! I need to look at your 1045 thread to remember what parts you are after. I also have a 1045 I need to finish up this winter. The hood of the 855 is about the only direct swap. An 855 was my first Horse.....I'd save it.... Terry the (1965) 855 should have the Wheel Horse script type logo at the back of hood each side & at the back of the fender pan with the metallic Wheel Horse logo at the front of the hood in place of the headlights that were not offered within the hood till "67 ?" Looks like this 855 has some mix & match going on with the fuel tank tray. Still a nice tractor though with some effort & paint. :USA:
bell 11 #9 Posted October 4, 2008 Well... the hood, dash, t/c cables, and belt guard (with some slight modification) are going on the 1045 and the engine is going on the 633... I'd love to restore it, but I have a very similar one already (876)... And I can't afford to fix them all. :banghead:
bell 11 #10 Posted October 4, 2008 And, I'll keep the rear sheetmetal and transaxle around... in case the hydro ever gives out on the 876. :banghead:
saguaro 0 #11 Posted October 5, 2008 Nice find. I'll keep looking. I get some real serious looks from people when I slow down going by the farms out here. Sorry to hear it be a parts tractor, but that's the way goes, sacrifice 1 to save a few.
sorekiwi 761 #12 Posted October 5, 2008 And I can't afford to fix them all. Hey Jon, you probably could if you didnt get a "new" one every couple of days or so! :banghead:
JimD 3,347 #14 Posted October 5, 2008 hi bell, sure am glad to see you're reconsidering what to do with the horse. that's an awful nice ride to part out. and you're right about ebay getting to be expensive. i can hardly find anything reasonable there anymore. good luck with it, and keep us posted, jim. jusjeepn 59 #16 Posted October 5, 2008 Nice one Jon. Your gonna have to slow down and leave some of those Indiana horses for the rest of us! Out of state rustling is just about of the question anymore (fuel prices) Horse poor Pat

bell 11 #20 Posted October 9, 2008 Nice score way to read the ads wish I could fall into a deal like that Well, I put a lot of footwork into it. It may look like I just "fall into" these things, but I spend quite a bit of time on the local classifieds and going to the local flea market... You have to bring a flashlight and get there about 4am to get the good deals... (hint, hint) And I have a pretty good "network" of buds all over the country. (sometimes it's a pain, when they call me and tell me about one 400+ miles away and I decide that I have to go get it... like my 603)
bell 11 #21 Posted October 11, 2008 Been tinkering with the 855.... I moved the hubs out a bit for some "fresh" keyway... and tightend them.... Then, I mounted the AGs... I cleaned/ tuned the carburetor today and got it running PERFECT!!!! So, I made a trip to Tractor Supply and bought a new muffler... This thing sounds GREAT! :horseplay: I'll be off all weekend, next weekend... and if things go as planned, I'm gonna partially tear it down for a fresh coat of paint. SHE'S A KEEPER!!! Sorry about the low light, I'll try to get her outside tomorrow for a few better pics...
