ljdrafting 0 #1 Posted July 27, 2014 (edited) I just acquired a 1976 C-160 in decent shape from the original owner. The clutch and brake do not work properly, basically it will not disengage the transmission. I appears to have too short of a belt. The 5/8" wide belt is measuring about 81 1/2" around the outer circumference. It looks like it needs to be at least 2 or 3 inches longer. I was checking to see if anyone knew the correct length so I don't have to guess. Thanks Larry Edited July 27, 2014 by ljdrafting
rmaynard 16,291 #2 Posted July 27, 2014 (edited) First question is do you have the belt guard on? The belt does not release from the drive pulley on the engine unless the guard is in place, and the tabs that push the belt away from the pulley are in the correct position. The correct size for the belt is 5/8" x 82". Toro #7473. Here is a good resource for locating belt size if you know the part number: http://www.mymowerparts.com/partslist/1030/13959.php Edited July 27, 2014 by rmaynard
ljdrafting 0 #3 Posted July 27, 2014 Hello and yes the belt guard is or was in place. I suspected the belt to be too short because there is a tab on the idler pulley that the clutch pedal moves. The tab extends over the top of the belt so when the clutch is applied the tab catches the released belt and keeps it from coming off of the pulley. The tab is in the about 1:00 position looking from the right side of the tractor and barely clears the belt in it's drive position. When the clutch is applied and the pulley rotates forward to about a 2:00 position the tab drags on the belt before the belt has a chance to come out of the groove and keeps it in the groove therefore not releasing the belt. The tab appears to be welded to the idler pulley bracket? I will take a closer look and see if perhaps it has broken off and some one has welded it back on in the wrong position. It seems the belt I have should be correct. Thanks for the help.
