1987 Kohler 14 magnum need muffler

I have a 414-8 that the muffler rotted out and I can not find one to replace it for less than $200 so I'm hoping somebody can help me ejumapav.jpgybyvu2ej.jpgypu9e5u2.jpgqu6ybuja.jpg

Good luck as I was just in your shoes. The cheapest I found was on ebay for about 170 luckily I was able to fix mine but mine was screwed up internally. actually yours looks like it would be an easier fix.

Got a welder?  I had to cut my 414-8's muffler open to remove a restriction, and just welded it shut. Cut back to thicker metal and weld shut.

This was a weird problem to solve.

The inlet tube on the muffler, sticks inside the muffler an inch or so. The end of it is welded shut. It has a ring of holes drilled around the tube for the exhaust to enter the muffler.

This end rotted off, and the end piece was loose in the muffler.

I would be mowing the grass, and loose 85% power. If I shut it off and restarted it would run ok for a while, then loose power again.

When the tube end happened to move near the outlet, exhaust pressure would push it against the outlet and restrict exhaust. Turning engine off, and it would fall down, and all was well, untill it happened again.

I diagnosed it by putting my hand by the exhaust, when it happened, and there wasn't much pressure. Took muffler off and shook it and heard the piece rattle inside.

Back in the 70's I found restricted exhaust problems on some Chev's. when after driving thru a deep rain puddle, with a hot exhaust, the inside pipe (double wall tubing) would collapse inside the outer tubing, restricting exhaust 95% or so. It was a hard decision to cut a customers $180 "Y" pipe open because it might be the problem!

Check with Kelly ( a vender here on Red Square ) He might have a good used muffler. He is really good to deal with and honest as they come. You could always put a stack muffler on it also. Hope this helps.   :thumbs2:

over60pirate that is exactly what happened to mine!! I thought it was everything else but the muffler I had the carb off 4 different times :laughing-rofl: I even swapped the carbs between my 2 tractors. it wasn't until talking about it with my younger brother that he mentioned it sounded like a problem he had with a car that turned out to be clogged cats. so we quickly swapped mufflers and bam problem solved. I actually cut both end off of mine at the indent, made a new inlet tube, reassembled and welded shut. Those mufflers are a pretty cool design.

 

I checked with Kelly and he did not have any of those mufflers in stock. They are pricey even used so fixing is the best option.

I have a similar issue, but with my 312-8.  They are really getting rare and pricey.  I may have to learn to weld, and fabricate on my own.

Looks good! Nothing like a stack on a tractor!

Any chance you could post a pic showing where you braced it?

I didn't brace it anywhere but it's on there solid. It's thick walled 1 1/2 pipe clamped into the cast manifold. I can grab ahold of it and push, pull whatever and it doesn't move or wiggle.

I've never had a stack on a tractor, but i can understand why others have asked about a brace.

 

the stack puts a lot of weight hanging off the exhaust port and you run the risk of breaking the exhaust port off the engine if you ever run into something, (like a tree while mowing). sometimes even just the extra weight is enough to fatigue that area. I'm sure you would be unhappy if you damaged a nice engine......

 

the oem muffler kept the weight mass closer to the engine and was braced, might be a good idea to brace your new exhaust in some way.........

ive posted this before,i had a stack on one of my 414,sit was really cool and she ran real nice too,braced 2 ways,i was mowing around a tree and hit a branch,broke the factory elbow,i was lucky it didn't break the block,the stacks are great for show queens,not workers

With it just being clamped not braced if I were to hit a branch it wouldn't it just twist on the manifold? I think in you case the braces wouldn't have helped any
