4 wheel drive garden tractor project?

Recommended Posts

TT

It's an idea for a project, but would be much easier with an older Cub Cadet like this '63/'64 100 because of the parallel driveline.

This photo came from the web and said it was originally in an old tractor magazine. The front axle is a "heavily modified" Dana golf cart rear axle! This was the only picture I could find:

Terry I have seen that one too on one of the Cub boards...the guy does nice work & I beleive he has a cub crawler too?

I don't know the name either :D

Are you familier with Bob Rock?...he has a couple a wheel drive tractors.

One is a Wheel Horse vertical shaft tractor with a (Nova brand) tractor steering rear transaxle put on the front to make it a front wheel assist.

The other is an articulated D series copy made with 2 Case transaxels & a single pump feeding them both.

Here are a couple pics.

The Toro/WH one in the top picture looks familiar. I think it was at the WHCC show in June (?)

There's a guy close to me that collects Pennsylvania Panzers and he did an articulating one a few years ago.

I did the pulling tractor 2 years ago, and the tricycle this year. Now I need to do something for 2008....... wonder what that will be ??????? :D

I've seen a couple of JDs turned into 4WD. If I'm not mistaken both were articulated designs. One was a round fendered 110 and the other one was, I believe, a 300 series. The 110 would have the same engine to transmission belt setup that a Wheel Horse has, and the 300 series has a drive shaft.

A bit of tractor porn for you guys

Made buy a guy over here, 2 C series I think.

Same guy as the 4wd cub I believe.

made by Westwood. I drove one, its very smooth indeed, splits the power between the wheels, so they dont slip. Hydraulic powered off the trans at the rear.

I am currently projectless, so I must stop looking at this thread or I'll be getting ideas again.........

Thanks for the pics, Mith.

The top one, I don't know, it just looks like a waste to me. It appears as though he took two running tractors, and built one that can't really be used for anything but cruising. I don't mean to take anything away from it's engineering, as I'm sure there's a lot of fabrication there. But still I have to ask... why?

To me, a custom built machine is for more than just looks. It's to enhance the usefullness and/or performance.

Please guys, don't take this the wrong way. It's just one person's opinion.

Eldon.

Guess I'll vote for the articulated design. Ive been using steiner articulated tractors for about 12 years and they work great. Sold the last one this summer, have to say I miss the 4x4 this winter and we have not even had a big snow yet. Steiner and Ventracs are near the same here are the sites for both

Took a while to get that snow ball broke off in one piece. :D

Eldon, he built it to pull a cultivator or something. Its actually a smaller version of an exsiting idea.

Way back there was a guy, I believe called James Doe, who took 2 Fordson tractors and attached them, making the Doe Dual Drive tractor. The idea being, 2x the traction power and weight. So you can tow a much larger plough. A picture,

Mith you have really done your home work!

That's the pic of the Cub crawler I was thinking about.

Seems the builder may have an articulated Cub as well..I remember 3 in the pic I seen & the 2 above pictured by Terry & you were also in that pic?

I like the twin C series & it reminds me of the early 4X4 articulated tractor that are 2 tractors joined together like your pic to double the traction & drawbar pull.

I had added a pic of that twin C series in the Siamese Wheel Horse thread started by Jay in the chassis mods column...can't say I knew anything about it other than I found it interesting.

That pic of the old Fordson is great...makes me wonder how touchy those were to turn ?

I know the twin engine pan scrapers at work can flip in a turn from the bind with both engines going.

Terry yes Bob did have his Toro/Wheel Horse at the show last summer...I don't think he had his articulated though?

Nick the Steiner is cool, I had heard from a Wapack friend you had one.

My big project would be to build a 604/654/704 into a tricycle like an old Case or Silver King with one big wheel out front ahead of the tractor & the steering box behind the engine with the external linkage going out around to the front spindle... :D I'm still working up to it...LOL

It's funny, or weird, or whatever. But I got the idea for an articulated 4x4 Wheel Horse several years ago. Never knowing someone else had the same ideas.

Only difference is, they finished theirs. LOL

I ran into money issues, as well as a design technicality. Before those were solved, other projects came up.

The frame I made is still out there, and I gander and think about it now that I have the new stable and can SEE it again. Toying with different ideas of how to finish it now. Couple days ago I came up with another possibility. I have yet to see an electric, articulated, 4x4 Wheel Horse. hmmmmmm

Dale, more ideas than money in Michigan

Sounds cool Dale, I'd think with some golf cart parts...or atleast a look something could be made up.

Or if your a thrill seeker get a couple of them big DC motors farmers use for there iragation pumps & a long extension cord... :D

Projects are deffinatley fun & excited to dream up...even more rewarding to complete! :P
