JUSS10 250 #1 Posted July 9, 2014 I have a 654 that the hh60 runs but the electric start doesn't always work the best, the charging system is less than wonderful on it, and I just don't need electric on the tractor. That said, I recently got a HM80 8hp techy with a log splitter that I am working on. I have an OHV that will go on the splitter so I have this spare engine. I got it running last night and it seems to be ok. I was wondering how this engine compares in size to the 6hp that I have on the 654. Are they the same block? If I remove the fuel tank and extra intake "garb" off the HM80, do you think think it would fit under the hood of the 654? If it fits, it should be an easy swap and I could then get some more use out of the tractor. Thanks! Justin
SousaKerry 503 #2 Posted July 9, 2014 HM80 is a different block the small block Techys only went to 7Hp I believe. It may fit without the spacer plate under the motor. Best way to find out is to pull the motor and mock it up, it is only 4 bolts and a couple of control cables. That said the the key is that the shafts are of the same height relative to the frame, also the shaft must be the same size as well or you will need a new pulley. JUSS10 250 #3 Posted July 9, 2014 Thanks for the tip. I forgot about the bottom plate that is on the HH60 right now. I'll make some measurements comparing the HM80 to the K181 that I have sitting for another tractor. It does have a 1" shaft so I know I'm good there. Otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered. Just seems like a decent repower option for the tractor. Justin
sorekiwi 761 #4 Posted July 10, 2014 This one went away about 5 years ago, but I am fairly sure that it was an HM80 that was on it. The hood was butchered to make it fit around the intake.
JUSS10 250 #5 Posted July 10, 2014 Thanks for the photo. If it was just cut around the air cleaner, I think I can come up with something to fix that.
JUSS10 250 #6 Posted July 10, 2014 So i took some measurements on the HM80 and it is actually shorter height wise from the base of the engine to the shaft by about .75". That will give good room for an adapter plate, it may even bolt up to the plate that is currently on the tractor... Wishful thinking, but who knows. Will keep you all updated how this goes
JUSS10 250 #7 Posted July 15, 2014 Not sure how it managed to fit on the one in the picture above but i set it on the frame and put the hood on and I just don't think it will work. May just have to keep an eye out for a pull start k161 or k181. Thanks for the input. the HH60 is going to go back on for now. May try and find a way to get a pull starter on it. were the smaller, more common 5hp tecky engines the same block as the 6 thats on the 654? maybe I can pull a shroud, recoil, and catch for the flywheel and throw it on this engine.
