5xi Quiet Collector Drive Kit

Recommended Posts

tks08

I'm on an apparent wild goose chase for the drive kit for a 48" deck.  I picked the Quiet collector up recently and quickly found out that the drive for a 52" is not at all the same as the set up for a 48".

The model number for the kit is 79454.  Maybe there's one sitting on someones shelf still.  Local Toro deal says he can't even look it up.

Does anyone have any idea where I might source one of these kits out?  I guess my other option, and maybe even easier option is just getting a 52" deck.  I've got a pair of 48's, maybe I can swap one.

What I am supprised to learn is that they even had one for a 52". I only knew of the 44" and 48".

Hopefully that means there are a few of them out there for me then!  I price out the individual parts online, I stopped when it broke $1000.  I could get a dedicated grass sucking tractor by the time I bought everything.

Owning an "XI" that has attachments is not cheap. Just sayin'.

Congrats on finding a Quiet Collector, they work awesome.  I find mine to be invaluable in October and November.  Where did you find your collector?  Did you get a fair price? Did you have a drive a long way?  I made an 8hr round trip journey for my attachment and parted with $650 for a complete setup in excellent shape.

If it were me, I'd be on the hunt for a 52" deck to adapt your kit to.

This guy is in NY and has what looks like a 52" deck for the 5xi at a good price:

The likelihood of locating a 52" in mower deck for your 5xi will be many times better than finding a Quiet Collector Drive kit for any of the 5xi decks.  Used and even NOS in the crate 52" decks show up quite often on ebay and the classifieds.  Piecing one together from the parts fiche for a 48" deck will become cost prohibitive as you have noted.

For the uninitiated, a quiet collector mounted on my 522 for fall clean-up duty:

If you end up with a 52" deck (and I think you will) here are some super-affordable options for the attachment consumables (belts and bearings).

Toro is nuts for what they charge for the belts and they don't even show a part number for the bearings in the double idler that mounts to the left-rear axle to relay power to the quiet collector drive shaft.  I removed my double idler and found that you can drive out the bearings with a drift and a hammer or even an arbor press.  The bearing part numbers are easily legible and are included below:

I found it on Ebay.  The seller does a lot of dealing in wheel horse parts. (http://www.ebay.com/usr/mrsstones) They were also fantastic to deal with.  They had advertised no shipping because of the size of the item, but when I said I would pay the freight they looked into it.  If anyone wants a bulky item shipped check with Fastenal.  $100 got that giant plastic box shipped on a pallet from Illinois to Buffalo.

I've probably got the most bang for your buck lawn mower around.  It's ugly, I'll give you that, but I've got about $1500 into the whole deal.  Tractor, 2 48" decks, Plow, Single stage snow blower and now the collector.

ah yes, mrsstones out of roscoe IL

$300 plus shipping is an sweet deal.  When Toro was selling them they were like $2500 out the door I believe.

That ebay seller also just had a NOS 52" deck for a 5xi go unsold with no bids.  I think the BIN was $1,400

He also had a FEL for a 5xi go in the last year or so too.

that is a great deal on the shipping.  How did you think to use Fastenal?

Thanks for the drive belt info...very helpful!

A few years back I acquired a 5XI quiet collector and despite the 90 degrees between engine shaft and collector shaft managed to fit it to my C175. I have recently acquired a 522LXi and so am now swapping the quiet collector back to where it should be. As luck would have it, the collector came with a 52" drive kit, and my tractor has a 52" deck so all that was required was a repaint. 40 minutes spent burning the powder coat and blasting it clean followed by 10 minutes for zinc loaded undercoat followed by 15mins of black top coat and it is nominally back to new. Needed some washers to space the pulleys correctly and it is now installed, along with the drive belt. Incidently, I don't have the double pulley for the mower deck though they are still available. At $140 approx I decided to do something else. £20 got me a 120mm diameter cast iron pilot bore pulley which I bored out for the boss on the current pulley (to centralise it) and then drilled through two holes in the single pulley to bolt the two together. I then added another two bolts to give a little more strength. I usedcM6 set screws and tapped the holes in the pulley. There's not much room underneath so these need to have countersunk heads. I'll upload a photo of the pulley as soon as I have one.

Next job is to fit the collector and do a bit if restoration on that. It has noisy bearings, a rusty dump handle and no internal mesh scree.n

Quiet collector drive kit for 52" deck - double pulley constructed as outlined above by bolting a cast iron pilot bore pulley to the original single pulley. Works well!
