T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #1 Posted September 29, 2008 The last time I posted pictures of the 753, I had one front tire removed from the rim and the other front tire shot and with the sidewalls almost completely gone. After I got it running I put two mismatched trailer tires on the front and now she's driveable. Now it just needs new back tires as both rears are dry rotted and will go flat. In fact the left rear was going flat in these pictures.
MaineDad 87 #2 Posted September 29, 2008 Terry, You need the original metal seat so you can freeze your arse off in the winter I don't know how many times I had to sit on an extra pair of gloves to put some distance between the tush and metal :USA:
Greg Parnell 6 #3 Posted October 3, 2008 Hey Terry, I have a quick question. How does the hood mount to the front of the 753 tractor? My hood was "rigged on" up front by the previous owner and I don't think it is correct. Nice looking tractor! Thanks, Greg
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #4 Posted October 3, 2008 Greg. Thanks for the compliment, though your 753 makes this one look pitiful in comparison. The hood is fastened in the front with a 1/4 - 20 thumbscrew, it goes through a hole in the frame in front and threads into the hood. In other words the tab on the hood goes behind the frame. Here's the diagram: It's item no. 114. On mine the hood is bent a little and it's difficult to get all 3 thumbscrews to line up properly, but it will. You know, Frank, I was just thinking that I wouldn't mind having a snow blade for this 753. If you have one and the rear bracket, that'll be cool. :banghead:
perry 82 #7 Posted October 5, 2008 Terry, You need the original metal seat so you can freeze your arse off in the winter I don't know how many times I had to sit on an extra pair of gloves to put some distance between the tush and metal you need one of these Hot seat the 753 is lookin good T-mo :banghead:

T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #9 Posted October 10, 2008 Greg, Getting back to your question on how the front of the hood attaches - here's a good shot of the front showing how the hood goes behind the frame and the thumbscrew in place. It threads into the hood.
WheelHorse_of_course 99 #10 Posted October 10, 2008 My 854 has a hinge. Is this correct or should it have thumbscrews? :banghead:
CasualObserver 3,411 #11 Posted October 10, 2008 should be thumbscrews 2 of Part 1345 and 1 of part 1346... both NLA, but the measurements are they are both 1/4"-20 bolts... the short ones(1345) are 3/8" and the long one (1346) is 3/4" You might be able to find some at a dealer if you call around, but the last price Toro had on these was anywhere from $11-18 EACH!! :wtf: I'm pretty sure Norm sells some reproductions. Norm's Toys You can also see more info in this thread from a while back. http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #12 Posted October 10, 2008 I think those are the same size as the ones on the 753. All the thumbsrews on my 753 are rusted, but functional. Maybe if Norm has them I'll just buy them instead of trying to clean these.....
Greg Parnell 6 #13 Posted October 14, 2008 That's the problem. I looked at my hood and I'm guessing someone changed something. The hood has a hole in it and doesn't have threads for a thumbscrew to screw in at the bottom. Maybe it broke and someone modified it. I'll guess I'll have to modify it back so I can use a screw to hold it. Thanks
rustbucket 4 #14 Posted October 14, 2008 hmm im seeing something odd about the frame posted in the first tractor and the one treed posted mainly the front axle mount. the one treed shows is a flat front where ass the top one curves forward then down. hmm looks almost like a 64 frame under that machine. just a small observation since i got an 854 with that same frame and a supposed 754 with the bumped out front frame where the axle mounts. just my 2 cents in observation. Michael Bullington 5 #15 Posted October 14, 2008 something about the front end does not look correct, my 63 is flush in the front Michael
saguaro 0 #16 Posted October 14, 2008 I think I see what your talking about. I think it's the tie-rods behind the axle that are throwing you off.
saguaro 0 #17 Posted October 14, 2008 Is the front axle mount out further on the first one?
saguaro 0 #18 Posted October 14, 2008 They are different. The first one, the axle mount is under the frame. The second one it Is the front of the frame.
T-Mo-(Moderator) 4,611 #19 Posted October 14, 2008 I'm not sure what you guys are really referring to. The first picture, you can't really see the front that clearly. Here's a better look at that particular tractor, showing the front a lot better: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?...&hl=springfield The other photo you guys may be referring to is from the 1963 brochure which has a lot of blended lines and colors due to the quality of the print. Also, keep in mind, things shown in brochures do not, at times, reflect the true piece of machinery. That photo obscures the lines between the front axle and ties rods behind it. Michael Bullington 5 #20 Posted October 14, 2008 notice the brackets that hold the front axle in the tractor...they are made like the 64 model tractors...my 63 brackets are flush with the front of the frame...my 64 has that same swivel in the bracket...Maybe some of the late 63 tractors where just built this way. CasualObserver 3,411 #21 Posted October 14, 2008 Terry, they're looking at the spot I've circled. I think it's just a difference between prototype and production. The parts lists (both 63 and 64) all show it as a flat piece.
CasualObserver 3,411 #22 Posted October 14, 2008 TT's 753 is the same way. Here's the pic from the gallery.
Michael Bullington 5 #23 Posted October 14, 2008 that frame is correct, I checked out several pictures and all have the same brackets just like this one,,,my 63 lawnrange has the flat brackets ..now i just curious to what type the 653 and 633 has?
CasualObserver 3,411 #24 Posted October 14, 2008 For 1963, there were 4 different frames total. 1-953, 1-603, 1-LawnRanger, and 1-633/653/753. The only difference on the 633/653/753 models was the engine and whether it was recoil or electric start. The front of the 603 and the Lawn Ranger should be flat, and the 953, I can't speak to. Here's my 603.
saguaro 0 #25 Posted October 14, 2008 Do the Ranger and the 753 use the same belt guard.
