Just picked up a 312-8

One of our members here, NorthForker was getting rid of his 312-8, so I loaded up the kids and took a nice scenic road trip to Long Island.  I have to tell you, this was my first time in this area of LI and I have to say it's really nice.  Beautiful farms, great farm stands and just lovely countryside PLUS the ocean is just minutes away!

 

The machine is in great shape, everything is tight.  There's an engine vibration which needs to be addressed.  When running, the PTO will wobble, when I engage it it smoothes considerably, but there's still a vibration.  I am not sure if it's an engine bearing, the PTO or drive pulley.  I took the PTO Bell off and that is in perfect condition, but I didn't remove the clutch or race to check the condition of the drive pulley.  

 

  I have already cleaned it so it actually looks quite nice, the black on the hood could use a touch up and of course some decals from Terry!  In the mean time, I'll be continuing to check that vibration and decide what the final disposition will be, it starts up beautifully, so I hope it's easily fixable.

I bought one two weeks ago Karl with a 42 inch rear discharge recycling deck.    I know you are going to like that 312.  It is a very nice tractor!

 

 

I had a rattle in the hood which was due to the  3/8 inch bar the hood rides on and had to  repair the hood guides that the bar rides in and replace the bar which I made with a dremel.   But that silenced the rattle and the hood shuts tight now!

So far there's little it needs so I am hopeful that the vibration is something simple.  These Kohlers are pretty bullet proof.  Wish I could afford a Diesel replacement, now that would be cool in this machine.

I like your new 312 Karl. I'm sure the vibration is something minimal. You might have a mud dobbers nest in the flywheel. That can make an engine vibrate. I've seen it happen with an old K engine.

I hope the vibration is easy....  this one is starting to grow on me, it's my first 300 series!  Yeah, it has a 4-pinion, and probably 1" axle, but it's nice!

The little "cushion" thingie is missing on this one, damaged on my 414 as well.  I just ordered up 3 new ones so the hood closes properly on all of mine.

Pretty sure you will have 1-1/8 inch axles with the 4 pinion tranny.

You might check to see if the engine bolts are tight to the frame. My 314-8 when new had a vibration that would crack the glass sealed beam headlights. I couldn't find anything wrong with the engine, so I put some gasket/foam material between the headlight and the hood, all good some 16 years later!
