bo dawg 517 #1 Posted July 6, 2014 I probably had already knew this at one time but dang if I can remember. What was the last and final model tractor did Wheel Horse produced before they shut the doors? Then they were bought by AMC?
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #3 Posted July 6, 2014 I wonder what the line workers thought as they were putting together the last of the Wheel Horses. I met a gentleman last year who had recently retired (after 40 years of service) from Toro. He told me the day Toro stopped production of the Wheel Horse was one of the saddest days of his life.
DAVE L 31 #4 Posted July 6, 2014 I spent 18 years at Toro, and watched the last classic get crated and shipped out. It WAS a sad day!
bo dawg 517 #5 Posted July 6, 2014 That was a cool power point. Now that was Toro, but what about the last model when it was Wheel Horse before Toro.
AMC RULES 37,195 #6 Posted July 6, 2014 (edited) The 24th of May, 1974 was the day AMC took over. So, I would think the last true "Wheel Horse" must be a model from the '74 line up. Edited July 6, 2014 by AMC RULES
MalMac 1,332 #7 Posted July 6, 2014 What was the last tractor model to roll out of South Bend before Toro uprooted and abandon the South Bend Plant?
CasualObserver 3,411 #8 Posted July 7, 2014 Something in 1993 if I remember correctly. If you search google you should be able to find some news articles relating to that.
WheelHorse79 271 #9 Posted July 7, 2014 Does anyone know where and to whom that last Wheel Horse being assembled went to?
alswagg 128 #10 Posted July 8, 2014 My Grandfather worked for Studebaker from 1954 to 1968, Then for Wheel horse from 68 to 74 This is one reason why I now have two Wheel horses. I am not sure what line he worked on, but I want to think that he may have assembled my D 180's.
shallowwatersailor 3,214 #11 Posted July 8, 2014 Here is another wrinkle to the thread. I was in the process of moving my wife to Maryland in Fall 2009 with me to follow in June 2010. It's a long story due to the real estate meltdown! My local WH dealer had five Classics left that the county school district (my former employer as it turned out) had refused delivery on. There wasn't the funding in the budget to purchase them. The dealer was selling them off the floor and offered me one. When I went back in Spring, they were gone. The school district finally did purchase them. So even though they were assembled, some dealers sold them brand new at least until 2010.
