Aldon 4,828 #1 Posted July 4, 2014 Well, I went to look at a 71 Bronco today (worse than advertised) and instead, ended up with a Kohler M20 Horizontal. The sky caved in with torrential rains so I was not as observant as I should have been in regards to the size of the output shaft while strapping in in and seeking shelter in the pick up. Once home I measured it at ~ 1.45 inches. While I can likely get creative with running a pulley/belt to another pulley to get step down to 1 inch diameter pulley & PTO(which would take away from the original look quite a bit), does anyone have any ideas short of changing out or machining the crank output? Is there a PTO clutch manual or electric that would fit? Any other ideas? Would really like to use this on my primary mower.
19richie66 17,757 #2 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) I have a 1-7/16 taperlock bushing with a pulley on mine. Not running a deck or anything though.just a cruiser. It is a #1610 taperlock. I think it is tapped 5/8-20. They are all over ebay. Edited July 4, 2014 by 19richie66
Aldon 4,828 #3 Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Do you feel running the deck off this set up to be problematic? I would likely just go with a straight pulley if I cant use it for driving the mower deck.... Actually, I would machine it but would like to avoid premature surgery Actually, I might need a picture to understand what your intent of a taperlock was for.....after googling it. Was the taperlock to assure the pulley stayed on shaft? Mine does have a key slot in the shaft. Edited July 4, 2014 by Aldon
baerpath 517 #4 Posted July 4, 2014 I run a taper lock pulley on one of my pullers It's a modified KT21 no problems after 3 yrs You could have a regular pulley bored and broach a new key way into it
Aldon 4,828 #5 Posted July 4, 2014 I appreciate the feedback thus far. I am pretty certain I can easily mount the engine and find a pulley. Whether its a Taper pulley or some other type that drives the Hydro. I am pretty new to Mowers so I may ask questions that confuse the more seasoned gents on this forum. So while I feel there is no issue in powering the Hydro and using the M20 to cruise, I am trying to figure out how to drive the Mower deck on demand rather than full time on. After a bit of research, I believe this was originally on a gravely tractor. And according to the drawing, the shafts actual size is 1.437 which confirms the engine as 20Hp rather than 18. I believe the fella that sold me the engine indicated it was a 1.25 shaft. I think it may have been a legitimate mistake on his part. As the 18 has the smaller shaft. I I do not know Gravely's at all so I am not sure how they transferred the power. But from lack of PTO's after much searching ths far, I have to assume they drove a main pulley to another set of pulleys...
Aldon 4,828 #6 Posted July 4, 2014 I found literature on the Warner electric site that indicates that they make such an animal. It may be as simple as googling 7/16 instead of 1.473. But after the holiday, I can make a call if nothing else....
Aldon 4,828 #7 Posted July 4, 2014 I can evidently use a JD 318/322 etc series electric pto as they are same for use on onan 1 7/16 shaft. However they are pretty spendy. Other options or ideas appreciated....
