So I'm down to final assembly of the carb and throttle linkages and realize my throttle / governor cross shaft is not inside the block.   everything is sealed and painted.  will I be able to take the oil pan off and sneak that through the rest of the rotating mass somehow?

Nope...not even Houdini could do that. Gonna have to pretty much tear it all down again.

We once assembled a honda motorcycle engine and put a clip in the wrong direction, lost gears 3-5 after just a few minutes of riding.  Snapped a transfer shaft, and ate up some new busings we put in.

So everyone has done it.  The crank, cam, and gear needs to come back out.

You have my deepest condolences. Like Fordiesel said, we have all done things like that. You just have to bite the bullet and tear it down again. I remember about the fuel pump cam left off a Ford 302 once after a complete overhaul. Didn't notice till I tried to start it, and had no fuel at the carb.

I'm not sure, but I think you might be able to do it if you pop the Welch plug out.

Just tear it down and do it RIGHT. Shouldn't take more than 2 hrs. or so and you'll be good to go.

On a k301 I know its possible. Ive done in when the tab on the cross shaft broke once. Two magnets and a flashlight. Not sure on the smaller ones. Never tried it.

Well I just enjoyed a cold one after working with the pan off for about 20 minutes.  yep with the help of a buddy, a flashlight, magnet and a couple long screwdrivers we were able to get it through the hole.  yee haw!

Golly that's good to know, we are glad for you.

I can't recall the reason but a couple years ago I

Had to take one down completely TWICE.

Just not on top of stuff any more.

A lot of us have been there done that.

I think most of us !!!!!
