Compression on Kohler K17 Series 2

Recommended Posts

km3h

Just picked up a Wheel Horse 417-8. The engine runs good and seems to have good power. It has 2050 or so hours on it. I do not hear any unusual noises and it does not smoke. I checked the compression and it is reading about 85lbs in both cylinders. Not sure if this is good, bad or indifferent.

I've been thinking I should probably pull the engine and check the valves as well as de-carbon the heads. I am going to keep this tractor so I don't mind spending some money and time on it.

Anyone care to offer some advice? It would be appreciated.

My KT Service Manual states that anything below 90 PSI may indicate the following:

1. A leaking head gasket. (Probably not since you have both cyl at 85 PSI).

2. Cyl head warped or loose. (Nah)

3. Worn Rings.

4. Leaking valves

5. Carbon buildup. (Excessive carbon buildup)

As you stated, decarbon it and recheck. You could also do a leak down on it as well. With 2k hours on it, you probably have some wear on the rings and valves since both cyl are reading the same.

I'm sure that with that many hours on it, the least it will need is de-carbon and valve adjustment. I don't have a leak down tester but have always wanted one. Now might be the time to buy one.

We have a member here "Pickle" who recently rebuilt his KT-17 series 2 engine. He may be a good person to send a PM and ask questions. He is located in our neighboring State of Kentucky.

Thanks Wheel-n-it   I may be able to run a compression test on my engine tuesday when I'm off work. I think I have run my engine about 30 hours this summer so the cylinders should be sealed up well by now..
