km3h 543 #1 Posted June 26, 2014 I went to the show last week hoping to bring home something to play with. Almost did several times and am really sorry I did not go after that nice D200 that was sitting at the show. Came home disgusted with myself. You can bet that next year I will be ready to pull the trigger a lot quicker. Well I am feeling much better today. I got myself a Wheel Horse 417-8. The deck has a hole in it and one crack. Not hard to fix. There is no rust to speak of on any other part of the tractor. It will need a seat. I suspect that it was kept indoors most of it's life. Now the hour meter says 2050 hours. I find that hard to believe because of the condition of the rest of the tractor. The 17hp Kohler is a series 2 and does not smoke and runs strong with no abnormal noise. Guy I got it from picked it up in Pa. and has had it for sale on Craigslist for about a month. All he knows is that he brought it home and put a new battery in it and cleaned the carburetor. My guess is that the engine was rebuilt sometime in the past or the hour meter is from another tractor. He is one of those guys who picks up junk for free. I happily paid the guy. He asked $450.00 and I offered him $350.00 which he accepted and I will pick it up on Tuesday and bring her home. At least my blues are cured for a while.

km3h 543 #3 Posted June 26, 2014 (edited) Sure can't and ,y blues are gone too. Almost had the DTs over coming back with no additions to the fleet. Men and boys, the only difference is the price of their toys. Edited June 26, 2014 by km3h
Ken B 3,189 #4 Posted June 26, 2014 I bet the hrs. are correct. Mine has roughly 2000 hrs. on the clock as well and the KT17 is still strong as an ox. I gave mine a quick refurb, it was a little more paint worn than yours is... All depending on what you will be doing with it you are better off with the 417 IMO. Nice score you made!
km3h 543 #5 Posted June 26, 2014 I really like that seat on your. What is it and where did you get it? I need three of them.
546cowboy 302 #6 Posted June 26, 2014 Looks like a 520 seat.
jdleach 525 #7 Posted June 26, 2014 Ahhh, nothing like a 417 to assuage depression. And no, $350 is hard to beat. Only thing better is if were free.

km3h 543 #10 Posted June 26, 2014 Been a lucky couple months for me. Last month someone came buy and gave me a 416h. All I had to do was help him get it off the truck. Had to replace the ignition switch and harness and it also runs like a clock. Only 525 hours on it. It has become my every day transportation around here as well as my grass cutter. that Onan engine is one smooth running piece of machinery. Sometimes things just show up around here like that. Neighbors clean out their barns and they stop here.

By the way, you did a great job on cleaning this up. I have my 417A torn down and painted. Now All I have to do is get the gumption to start putting it back together. I saw the job Martin did on his and it scared me. I know I could never do that good a job. But I will probably get at it next month after I get the garage cleaned out a bit. Never seem to have enough room.
AMC RULES 37,196 #13 Posted June 27, 2014 That one will clean up nicely.
km3h 543 #14 Posted June 27, 2014 I couldn't wait any longer and talked my neighbor into going with me today to pick up the tractor. Cut some grass with it and it does a good job but I think I like the rear discharge better on my 416H. I tried to get the serial numbers and whatnot from the tractor but the tag is faded and unreadable. Is there another spot on the tractor where a tag might be found? LFDRET 21 #15 Posted June 28, 2014 just to let you think - I put a hour meter on my C-161, put it away for the winter with under 200 hrs showing and in the spring it had a dead battery and over 3000 hr. on it. I left the key in the on postion. so neave trust a hr, meter,.
papaglide 542 #16 Posted June 28, 2014 Nice tractor. You will grow to like it for sure. I have a 417 A and love it. I really like the bigger diameter steering wheel.
km3h 543 #17 Posted June 28, 2014 I also have a 417A and a 416H and like both of them. I am getting ready to pull the engine and give it a good going over. The very least it will need is valves adjusted, I am sure and while I am at it I will clean the carbon from the heads and put new gaskets on it.
stevasaurus 23,276 #18 Posted June 28, 2014 Nice horse. It looked like you might have a mouse nest or leaves behind the engine screen...you might want to take a look...could be just the pictures.
km3h 543 #19 Posted June 28, 2014 Just the pictures. Screen is clean. I am pulling the engine anyway to do valves and head de-carbon. I will make sure everything is clean when I put it back together.
HorseFixer 2,013 #20 Posted June 28, 2014 (edited) Looks like a nice Horse to start out with. Way Better than mine when I did her? You can right click on the last picture in my signature to view my 417A refurb. Good luck with yours! ~Duke Edited June 28, 2014 by HorseFixer
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #21 Posted June 28, 2014 Congragulations on the 417. I hope to add another one to my collection in the future. I love the sound of the KT-17 engine.
km3h 543 #22 Posted June 28, 2014 Duke You did a great job on that tractor and while I was there I looked at some of your other projects. You are a craftsman. My 417A is stripped down and most has been repainted. Waiting for the gumption and time to start the re-assembly.
