rstewart 0 #1 Posted June 25, 2014 Hope all is well. I recently acquired this and after a basic carb cleaning, jumped tractor off and she fired right up. Runs great. Removed jumper cables and she stopped running. Any help?
SousaKerry 503 #2 Posted June 25, 2014 Quite simple a Kohler 8hp engine needs a battery for the ignition to work unless it has magneto ignition. If it has a standard round automotive type coil it needs a battery, if the coil is located under the flywheel then you don't need a battery.
rstewart 0 #3 Posted June 25, 2014 So if I put a good battery in tractor, it should start and stay running?
Save Old Iron 1,571 #4 Posted June 25, 2014 start and run -yes stay running depends on the functionality of the charging part of the starter generator
rstewart 0 #5 Posted June 25, 2014 Thanks...can I check/test the starter-generator?
Save Old Iron 1,571 #6 Posted June 25, 2014 apparently the starter half of the SG is working as the engine does crank, the charging function is easily confirmed by measuring the battery voltage while the tractor is running the voltage across the battery terminals should be 13.8 to 14.5 volts while engine is running.
