lawn ranger engine transplant

Some of you will remember that the Tecumseh V70 engine expired on my sons ranger after 40 years. The con rod has snapped and knowing they aren't that reliable (though 40 years isn't bad) I've chosen what I trust to be a better replacement.

Here's the Ranger in happier times...

and now on my new Ranger maintenance station - my knees are getting too old to crawl on the floor. Parts can be stored underneath out of the way and it's on wheels smile.png

here's the new Engine ready to drop in, needs the pulley swapping over and a small mod to the chassis to make it fit. I will need to change the ignition switch and fit a solenoid. At least this one has a reasonable charge stator - so we can run some lights!

Well managed a few hours today and am pretty pleased :D

Pulleys came straight off

Shaft is 1" and keyway is identical too, so a straight swap

Just four new holes and a Briggs 8 hp drops straight in, even the old tecumseh exhaust fits. Despite the engines being different sizes and makes. Just a small mod to the heat shield to stop it fouling the hood.

Started first time :D

Nice work, and it looks like you were able to use the old muffler too. Was that luck or did you have to make it fit?

I had to drill the holes out in the teccy muffler to 3/8" the threads are different between engines. By total luck the muffler fits then and goes through the hole. It's tilted forward by about 15 deg, but you can't tell. The Briggs heat shield is still there too and I had to move one bolt hole on the heat shield to stand it straight so it didn't foul the hood.

Oh, Id say it was worth the extra effort.

What Lawn Ranger do you have (ie model number, year, ect), and what help do you need (not being sarcastic). If you can't derermine year or model can you post a pic ("More Reply Options" allows upload of file photo) which is really helpful. Some of the guys on here are so good that you can show them a bolt and they can tell you which tractor it fits ! Up on top of page (where reads across "FORUMS, MANUALS, ect you can also search through miriads or free downloads (manuals).
