gpirkola 4 #1 Posted June 19, 2014 I'm new to this forum and unfamiliar with the value of "old stuff", so bear with me here a bit. I have a Wheel Horse C-175 (twin 17 Kohler engine) that I purchased in 1981, and replaced just a few years ago, and I am now trying to decide what to do with the C-175. It's got some problems. It starts and runs (with the help of a battery charger and starter fluid), but it runs very rough and seems very under powered. The oil looks fine, but not surprisingly when I did a compression test recently, one cylinder was 90 psi and the other was 0 psi, so the engine will need some major work (broken rod?, new rings?). When I run it for a bit, it also has (a minor?) fluid leak in the transmission area, so it likely will need at least some new seals? Since it's been sitting in the garage for a few years with low tire pressure, I notice a crack in the sidewall of one tire, so I suspect it will need at least one new rear tire. At one point (after I retired I thought I might try and get the C-175 back in shape again myself, but more and more that project appears unlikely to happen. So my quandary is to determine whether this C-175 would still have some value to someone, i.e. should I try and sell it? or should I just scrap it (for whatever the metal is worth)? I do have a number of attachments for the C-175 that I believe do have some value, like a 48" side discharge mower deck, a 42" snow thrower, a 42" lawn sweeper and a 40" mid mount grader blade, and so those attachments I will likely try and sell at some point in the future. Thanks in advance for any advise you might provide for the C-175 tractor. Gary Pirkola .

SousaKerry 503 #3 Posted June 19, 2014 You should toss the thing out, I have a nice spot in my yard where you can thow it.... No seriously those machines are definatly worth the time. I have one and love it you will never find a more verstile and heavier built machine to replace it unless you want to buy a sub compact tractor for big $$$$$. Pull the heads off the engine I would be willing to bet you have a valve stuck open. Simple fix and it will only cost you 2 head gaskets. Oh and we can get you a nice new to you steel fender pan to keep your hand out of the wheels as well.
AMC RULES 37,196 #4 Posted June 19, 2014 Beastly machine you have there... no better feeling than bringing it back to life. Definitely worth your efforts... and you'll always have here if you need help.
Desko 624 #5 Posted June 19, 2014 What ever you do DON'T scrap it. If you decide to fix it it shouldn't be hard to get her running like a top, and if you decide to sell someone here would love to have it.

Digger 66 3,488 #7 Posted June 19, 2014 should I just scrap it (for whatever the metal is worth)? NOOOOOOO !!!!! ^ If you're mildly mechanically inclined with the help of the masterminds on here you'll pat yourself on the back when it's all done . You'll have a much better tractor than anything claiming to be equal produced nowadays. Welcome to Red Square .
jdleach 525 #8 Posted June 20, 2014 Agree with all the above, keep it. If you feel you cannot get it back in shape, by all means, put it up for sale in the forum sales section, there are many on this forum who would love to have it. Welcome to Red Square!!!!! Save Old Iron 1,571 #9 Posted June 20, 2014 Gary, I see a $700 "swing decision". If you invest $700, you have a fine tractor If you sell the tractor - maybe $200 as is. Then add about $500 for the attachments if they are in decent condition. You can either spend $700 or put $700 in your pocket.

JC 1965 1,532 #11 Posted June 20, 2014 Save it if at all possible. Even if that means you have to sell it.
47JDG 65 #12 Posted June 20, 2014 As others have said absolutely don't scrap it. It is in far too good of condition for that, and there are many good parts there also that someone else would love to have if you were to decide to sell. It may just be a stuck valve. If it were me I would tinker with it and get it back into shape to use again. You can't beat a wheel horse for the money. The next step up is a sub compact tractor which costs big bucks. You said in your post that you replaced this tractor a few years ago. If you replaced it with another heavy built garden tractor or a sub compact then you may no longer have a use or need for this wheel horse. If you replaced it with a light duty lawn tractor mainly for mowing, then I would absolutely keep the wheel horse around for heavier duty jobs, or as simply a back up mower to your new machine. I guess it just depends on your situation and needs. You shouldn't have any trouble selling it with the attachments for the right price.

leeave96 490 #14 Posted June 20, 2014 I hope you can save the tractor. The Wheelhorse makes for a great hobby and you'll have lots of support here and pretty soon, you'll be the one explaining how to restore a tractor like yours. Even if you can't fix the engine, others will bolt in too. Good luck, Bill

gpirkola 4 #18 Posted June 23, 2014 Thanks for all the positive responses. I definitely will not scrap the C-175. More likely I will attempt to sell it (on the classified section here) once I get a better sense for a fair listing price. - Gary
