Forest Road 594 #1 Posted June 19, 2014 Any opinions on them? Found one locally hadn't run in 2 years. Except for the broken and muffler burned hood overall it looks good. Includes single stage blower, snow cab, wheel weights, 42" or 48" sd deck with power flow bagger. Looks to be complete. How did the trans hold up on these? I've heard the deck can also be mounted on classic series. Can anyone verify this? Seller is asking $500. Which to me is a biting for a non working machine. But not out of line if the attachments fit any other popular models.
Racinbob 11,925 #2 Posted June 19, 2014 No experience with them but I believe they have a vertical shaft engine. I'm pretty sure the attachments won't interchange with the 300/400, B/C series tractors. If they are referring to the Classic series as the later models through 2007 I would say no. I have a 2005 Classic GT and it's like the 300/400 B/C series.
rexman72 210 #3 Posted June 19, 2014 forest i had the 419XT and i used it to plow for over ten years in maine and mow the grass. The trannys on the XTs are hydro gear 330 series which is better then the 260 series that it replaced.
wh500special 2,267 #4 Posted June 19, 2014 It's not a rumor; despite it being a vertical shaft, the attachments are supposed to be compatible with the older "classic" tractors. I'm not sure the "completing kits" (idlers, lift arms, etc) are the same, but the attachment itself is supposed to hitch right up. I think Refracman has one that he bought new and he always has reported that the 400XT series were capable, stout machines. Like all the other vertical shaft WH's, they suffer from less than enthusiastic reception from the collecting crowd. Steve
leeave96 490 #5 Posted June 19, 2014 IMHO - they are a good lawn tractor. None of them had the K71 type Tufftorq trannys and so ground engaging would be a risk. Perhaps the competition packages are still available for the implements - don't know. $500 IMHO may be on the upper end. FWIW - I bought a Simplicity Landlord DLX for $100, it had a bad engine. Found another engine for $100 and about $50 in misc parts. Still needs a tweak here and there, but makes for a great lawn tractor. The tractor you are looking at might be a good project for the $$$s you would spend. Btw - I saw a similar Landlord tractor on CL for $2700 ish. Don't think the guy will get the price, maybe 1/2 of it, but if you can make lemon aid out of a lemon, might be worth a try and save some $$$’s in the end. Racinbob 11,925 #6 Posted June 19, 2014 I did a search on that model before my first post in this thread. They look like good machines. The attachments on the pics I looked at looked very similar to the 300/400 series but I figured the vertical shaft would be a problem with powering the attachments. I've never heard of the 'completing kits' Steve mentioned but kudos to Toro for making them. With the info posted so far it might not be a bad deal.
rexman72 210 #7 Posted June 19, 2014 you don't want the completing kits because they are anywhere from 500 to 1200 bucks just for the kits when I called toro a few years ago
Racinbob 11,925 #8 Posted June 19, 2014 WOW!!! Maybe those kits aren't such a great idea.
Forest Road 594 #9 Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) Thanks guys! Sounds like the PO passed away. His widow is trying to sell it on the side of the road. So far she's not willing to comedown from $500. Too bad cause the deck, blower, & cab look mint in the pics. Edited June 20, 2014 by Forest Road
shallowwatersailor 3,214 #10 Posted June 20, 2014 After looking at the Toro site, it appears that there were conversion kits for the Classic decks to be compatible with the 4xt series. Are you sure that you don't need it? It seems like a good deal for a ten or less year-old tractor with all of those accessories.
rexman72 210 #11 Posted June 20, 2014 forest the attachments are worth 500 alone
refracman 167 #12 Posted June 20, 2014 Forest I would not trade mine for nothing less than a nice lxi and i have a c160a and a c195 that sit because i prefer the 417xt over them. and yes the snow plow and deck are basically the same. They are very capable machines. With those attachments thats a good price even if it needs a motor.
RMCIII 838 #13 Posted June 20, 2014 forest the attachments are worth 500 alone Agree, that single stage is worth $350.00 alone for the condition it is in. I'd bite on that one. Just sayin.
Forest Road 594 #14 Posted June 20, 2014 Thanks guys. If I really really needed it I'd run up there. Unfortunately my WH addiction is messing with me on thus one. Unfortunately with 3 kids time is really tight right now. If anyone is interested it's near Washingtonville NY Orange County. For more info PM me.
Racinbob 11,925 #15 Posted June 20, 2014 Well I'll be. This is directly from a sales brochure. But.....they didn't mention if it was a direct fit or if you needed a kit. It's worth looking into deeper. The 400XT's Attach-A-Matic system allows you to connect Toro garden tractor implements quickly and easily. You can even use attachments you already own from a "classic" Wheel Horse® tractor.
rexman72 210 #16 Posted June 20, 2014 I can tell you that you will need a lit for most every attachment.
Racinbob 11,925 #17 Posted June 20, 2014 There you have it. Nice of Toro to forget to mention that isn't it. Forest, based on that info it still might be a decent deal as long as the goodies that are included suffice for you.
rexman72 210 #18 Posted June 20, 2014 yes I want to take a snowblower off a 260 series tractorthat the guy was going to sell me and put it on my XT and when I called toro and got a price for the conversion kit,it was 700 bucks
ericj 1,579 #19 Posted June 23, 2014 i bought a 48" deck a few years back at a dealer going out of business sale swap the rod that goes up in the quick attach and it fit right on a 520. was worried at the time that it might not mow right so a guy i know offered me a real nice used deck and other stuff plus some cash for it so i let it go. but since then i have learned that it is a direct fit swap in fact the brand new decks that toro sell are the same basic deck as that one was. don't know about the snow blower. and by the way i still have the n.o.s. front bull gear pulley assy. for the xt if anybody is interested shoot me a pm eric j
