C127/175 may have bit the dust

I was pushing some brush around last night with the "Big Tractor"  when all of the sudden I smell oil and look down to see it covering my shoe.  I yank it into reverse and kill the engine and coast to a stop.  Of coarse I was at full throttle when it happened and so I get a loud pop from the muffler.   I open the hood and too my horror everything is soaked in oil.  The battery tray is half full of oil the entire control stand is soaked the underside of the hood is soaked and dripping...

It was getting late so I had had enough for the night and left her where she stands.  I thought it might have been the oil pressure line but that was intact and I can not find any other source with a quick look.  When I get home tonight I will start tearing off the engine tins to find out where it is coming from.  I am hoping against hope that a pipe plug or something rattled loose.  Engine ran fine until I killed the ignition and I am to afraid to start it until I know what happened.

The suspense is killing me.  Work can't end soon enough today.

Oh yeah almost forgot it is a KT-17 series II from a retired Cub.

I would doubt you had a catastrophic event happen to the motor. You were pushing brush! Maybe some brush hit your hydro lift lines or punctured the hydro filter. Let us know what happened and here's hoping for a minor fix!

We are all in suspense with you. Our KT17s want to know what fate may be in store for them.

I do not believe the cub application had the ball bearings on the PTO end like the wheel horse application did (due to the load of the drive and accessory belts) so maybe the bushing wore out?

Well the mystery is solved. A $.50 piece of plastic oil pressure line burst right next to the oil pressure guage.

Didn't see it last night but found it today in about 10 minutes once I pulled the battery.

What oil pressure readings do you see for the engine?  If I had to guess I would say 20 at idle and 40 at WOT?

I was thinking of adding an oil pressure gauge to one of my KT17 IIs.

But, if the oil pressure gauge hook up was responsible for the loss of oil pressure, then maybe I will skip it or use metal oil pressure lines?

Actually I see about 60-80 at idle and cranking. About 40-60 running and good and hot. Kohler really over did that little pump so those engines would never fail again.

Yeah anad I will never use plastic line again

Metallic line all the way for me. I did not want to suffer with the failure of a plastic line when I installed these gauges in my 1986 chevy truck.

Love the Vac guage Van!  :)  When I was little my uncle had a monster factory vac gauge in his 65 Impala SS.

I used to love watching it go back and forth!   :banana-dance:  :auto-layrubber:

Pictures of the mess and the temporary fix.  All I could find was a shrader valve so it will have to do.  Believe it or not I didn't even have to add any oil.  Put it back together and finished the job.

I'm glad it was just motor oil and not a hydro line. You caught it quick and all is well. Glad it was a nuisance issue and nothing major.
