Wheel-N-It 2,976 #1 Posted June 8, 2014 Yesterday I bought a 416-8 with a Kohler Magnum 16 engine. Engine runs great, starts right up, no knocks, no smoking, however the govenor is not controlling the engine speed at all. I just now adjusted the shaft per spec. The shaft will turn counterclockwise and stop. I then removed the spring attached to the govenor linkage arm to let me manually move this linkage by hand to see if I could feel any resistance from the govenor trying to react to the engine rpms. I felt no resistance from the govenor. Where should I go from here in an effort of tracking down the problem? Thank you in advance as always. Van
AMC RULES 37,211 #2 Posted June 8, 2014 If it has one of those nylon govenor gears inside the block... it may be all fubared up. Have a parts manual for that engine?
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #3 Posted June 8, 2014 Not exactly Craig. Just what I can download. I'm thinking its time to get inside the engine but I hope to be wrong about that.
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #4 Posted June 8, 2014 OK when all else fails, look up how to do it on YOUTUBE. Crazy4WheelHorses has a video of how to adjust a kohler governor on YouTube. I recommend this to alll the members of Red Square. I thought I had followed the manual on how to make this simple adjustment but must have missed a step (or did something stupid). The governor works just as it should now. Thank you Craig for your reply to my question.
Martin 2,133 #5 Posted June 8, 2014 thats great it was an easy fix, Van.......... sometimes just taking a step back and some youtube research (or google in general) can save you a bunch of time. better than tearing into it and finding out it was a simple adjustment to fix!!!
squonk 43,967 #6 Posted June 8, 2014 Great! Now you can tear that engine off that tractor, bring it to the show and give to me. I could use a 16 Horser!
AMC RULES 37,211 #7 Posted June 8, 2014 Glad you got it... what made you think to look there?
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #8 Posted June 8, 2014 (edited) Thank you Martin! Its good to hear from you. I hope you can make it to the Big Show. Mike, I would bring you that engine but actually I bought the whole tractor to take the good stuff off of for use on my other Wheel Horses. The super nice padded high back bucket seat has already been installed on my 414-8. The 16 Magnum will go on my C-165 Black Hood. The brand new fuel guage will go on my 314 Auto. Other bits and pieces will go here and there as necessary. I really lucked out with this engine. The C-165 engine has a broken dipper on the connecting rod due to balance gear failure. Now I don't have to spend big bucks to get that engine rebuilt. I can use it for a parts engine for my other K motors. I've been looking for a good 16 Magnum for a year now. Its taken me this long to find one that was within an hours drive and also not outrageous in price. This engine has a brand new Walbro carb on it. The old one was suffering from a worn out throttle shaft. Craig, when all else fails (as it did here) I always check You Tube. Its really amazing what can be learned there. Edit Part; This week I need to go get the K-341 from my friend Kevin who was going to rebuild it for me. I'm sure glad he did not get started on it. I had much rather have the 16 Magnum on the C-165. Me happy now Edited June 8, 2014 by Wheel-N-It
squonk 43,967 #9 Posted June 8, 2014 I been looking for a good 14 or 16 to put on my Spirit of 76 C-160. It's starting to show it's age. All I seem to run across are 12 's
Wheel-N-It 2,976 #10 Posted June 8, 2014 I been looking for a good 14 or 16 to put on my Spirit of 76 C-160. It's starting to show it's age. All I seem to run across are 12 's I know what you mean Mike. I was having the same problem here. 12's are not hard to find but 14's and 16's are few and far between.
