I am speeding up my 414-8 and need belt size help

OK, after cutting my grass several times this season so far with the 414-8 I've decided to change the engine pulley to the hydro pulley.  I was led to believe you just went with a hydro belt but not so, too short.  The belt number that is on the tractor was a Toro 93-9808 103.  The hydro belt I tried was a Wheel Horse 114895.  Can anyone out there know what belt I need based on that info?  As always thanks in advance.  Frustrated in Hebron...

if you go from a 7466 (8 speed pulley) to a 7443 (hydro pulley) you need an additional 2 inches in belt length to compensate.  i have tried a 106496 and that is the right length with a hydro pulley on an 8 speed. i was going to go with that setup on my 416-8 build until i realized there is a very slight clearance issue with the belt as it passes under the hood stand right at the leading edge. there is a factory cut out there for clearance and it really isn't enough if you get some belt movement. i didn't want to clearance the hood stand on my 416 as id already spend considerable time getting it painted and on the tractor.  the reason the belt is closer is because the belt position is raised slightly with the larger diameter pulley.......

it would only take a little work but i didn't feel it was necessary to have the extra speed on this one. i did this mod to my c125 and there is details of that in my build thread on that tractor. its nice for cruising around the shows when you want to get somewhere quick.

i also found out that the c125 belts are just slightly shorter than 3,4,500 series, 8 speed for 8 speed and hydro for hydro......

oh and the reason why a hydro belt is not long enough is the path it takes near the hydro isn't spread as much as the 8 speed, on the 8 you have the extra length taken up with the idler pulley pushing the belt out in more of a triangle shape, where as the hydros are more of a stretched oval.

the clearance issue isn't really the belt touching, just for me it was too close to the hood stand. the belts sometimes move around a little and i didn't want any noises or banging around with the belts. ITS ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know what the length of the 106496 is in case my Toro dealer doesn't carry that tomorrow... Grass is growing and I got to get this resolved tomorrow...

i wouldn't go the aftermarket route. oem belts all the way. the hydros are a little more forgiving with aftermarket, but the manual tractors need an oem belt in my opinion.

HB 85.60" is 5/8" x 85-5/8"

I went to Toro dealer, no luck on a 106496.  He did confirm that the 5L850 I got from TSC was in fact 85" long.  I then when back to TSC and exchange it for a 5L840 and I got a 5L830 just in case.  I will bring the one back that doesn't work.  Stay tuned...

I use the 5/8" x 85" Kevlar belt by Huskee on my 416-8. Works fine.

Been using the Kevlar belts for my PTO drives and mower decks. Never any problems.

Yearly I give all belts a spray or two of Gumout Belt Dressing if that makes a difference, "don't know."

Have never used any OEM Wheel Horse belts and, I use the Horses fairly hard.

TSC is just a few minutes from me and the belts are always in stock, off the shelf. They run from $20 - $25 if I remember correctly. I keep spares hangin' in the shop, never had to use 'em.

On a 414-8 with a hydro engine pulley it takes a 5L840.  It works great and the increase in speed for second gear mowing makes a big difference for me.  I am well pleased even considering all the hassle involved.  Now to cut the grass...

2nd gear hi with the hydro pulley is perfect.  It cut down the mowing time quite a bit.  The only thing that I am going to have to get used to is how fast reverse is now.

Am having similar problem as zieg ---

My situation is - I had a C-165 roller with a bad engine but I had a good KT-175 engine and I wanted to take advantage of that Sundstrand... so, I figure why not make a hybrid. Well, changing the engine was no big deal, just change motor mount from frame up, but the 5L-85 belt that ran on the 16hp off a 5 1/4" pulley is a good bit too short - probably 2-3" (the KT-17 sits further forward maybe??)

Martin in a post above said that going from an 8sp to hydro pulley needed an extra 2", reckon that would be what I need to get, a 5L-87? or??

thats great you got it working. thats strange the 84 inch belt worked for you, too short for my 416, there was just no way to make the clutch work like it should.

the standard 8 speed belt 107939 is 83.5" long and you used a belt only 1/2 inch longer when the pulley circumference adds 2" to the length. i would be interested to see the angle of your idler pulley bracket, clutch in and out.

is your idler and trans pulleys both the standard diameter?

I have to assume everything is stock/standard.  I got the tractor used from whfan74 who probably got it in a trade.  I can tell you the belt that was on it was a Toro belt, 93-9808 with the smaller pulley.  The clutch feels exactly the way it did before so I have to assume the length is correct for this set up.

93-9809 is the superseded toro number for 107939. you had the standard 8 speed belt. i guess it doesn't really matter, the main thing is you got it working and you say everything is working ok so thats great.

i like the added speed on my c125. so did you check out the top speed yet?

not yet but it is about what my 520H is.  I'll check it next time I have it out with my GPS and will update this post.

that a improvement from: 8-speed manual stated ground speed with like 23 rears.

High

1st: 2 mph

2nd: 3.2

3rd: 5.5

that 2nd gear is what I would like to mow with. would like to try the conversion with my 416-8.  watch out for that 3rd gear!

2nd best improvement I've done with it.  1st best was the gear reduction steering and forward swept axle
