Work4crown 0 #1 Posted June 6, 2014 I recently acquired what I believe is a 1982 or 1983 Workhorse GT-1142. I'm not sure how to tell exactly what year it is since a previous owner removed all the labels from everywhere. The motor starts right up, runs smoothly and sounds good. It does backfire upon shutdown. When I want to shut it off I throttle it all the way down, wait 30 seconds and then shut it off. This is what I did with my 3 previous tractors which all had Kohlers (8hp, 12hp and 16hp). It doesn't backfire too loud but I am suspecting that the engine idles too high and might not pop if I could adjust the throttle down a little. The running speed sounds good so I don't want to disturb the high end adjustment. I did take a good look at my equipment and was not able to figure out what to turn, stretch, compress, twist, crush, or otherwise adjust to do this. There is a cover on the engine that has some numbers but I am suspect this cover is off another engine since the sticker is upside down. Nonetheless, here are the numbers from that label: Model: 252707 Type: 0632 Code: 82091611 Can anyone give me some advice on how to adjust the throttle on this model? Work4crown 0 #2 Posted June 9, 2014 Well, I found out that I do have the wrong cover on this motor. This cover is from a different engine that has a vertical shaft. I found that info by typing the numbers from the cover into this website: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/support/manuals/engine According to the Toro website https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro the proper number that should be on my cover is: Model 252417, Type 0664-01 (1982 & 1983 Workhorse GT-1142: Briggs & Stratton) When I enter that number into the Briggs page I get a link that has the Illustrated Parts list and Operator's manual for my engine. In the Operator's manual I found the info for how to adjust the throttle.
oldredrider 2,553 #3 Posted June 9, 2014 Happy you found the info you were looking for. Had intentions to dig up a carb so I might help. The engine tin you have has a date code of 1982 for what it's worth.
