Theroundhousernr 590 #1 Posted June 3, 2014 A good friend of mines house and garage burned down today. She was mowing and parked in the garage right after the mow. She went inside to get an Ice Tea and when she came out the garage was smoking. She quickly reacted and pulled out the Chevelle and the 1956 Ford. Before it all went up in smoke. Crazy lady...... The mower was a zero turn box store cub cadet. It was parked with in feet of the Chevelles gas tank. The paint is actually scorched from the heat and the gas tank is right under the trunk in that car. But love for these old cars kicked in. Luckly she is safe and so are the cars. Me and her son always warned her about cleaning off the mower but she failed to see the importance. The flames spread to the house and burnt it also. Luckly, the house roof and only one room burned. So she was able to salvage some items. The garage is only ashes now. Everyone and the dog is safe but It sure makes me glad I take the safety steps when done mowing. I give the 520h a cool down run while blowing all the grass off the tractor from around the hydro , motor and on top of the deck. Then I shut it down. When its cool , I push it in the garage. You would be hard pressed to find grass sitting on my mower in the garage. Take this as some advice and a warning. It can happen.... I must admit. I mainly was taking the steps of cleaning off and pushing in the garage because I am fussy and my garage is attached. So I don't like to spread the spell of running mower through the house. But now I look at it as a safety precaution also and I am glad I do it. Here is the link. What you see burning is the four car garage.... http://www.wfmz.com/news/news-regional-berks/firefighters-battle-multialarm-fire-near-topton/26289606 Kyle

AMC RULES 37,196 #3 Posted June 3, 2014 HOLY SMOKES... pretty intense fire there. Thanks for the heads up.
Theroundhousernr 590 #4 Posted June 3, 2014 My best friend had an 2004 Yamaha , old john deere , and rupp snowmobile stored there. The only thing left is the motor from the Yamaha. The aluminum tunnel is gone , it just melted. Incredible how hot the fire was. She said that she couldn't even see when pulling the cars out. She's a tough one though. Just shocks you when it happens to someone you know... I know she said she will never park a hot grass filled mower in the garage again.. I am looking into possible recalls on the cub cadet now for her.
Tankman 3,523 #5 Posted June 3, 2014 I always run cooling down the Horses before parking. That Gal had real spirit!
Save Old Iron 1,571 #6 Posted June 3, 2014 makes you wonder what else may have been at play besides grass clippings - and if grass clippings are responsible at all. I have seen K series engines jammed with year old dry clippings and dried mice nest grasses that never ignited - even with severe heat near the exhaust area and plenty of air flowing past the heated dry grass. maybe exhaust pipes glowing red from carb issues ?? maybe fuel leaks ?? JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,498 #7 Posted June 3, 2014 Lesson learned. The best part was no injuries to people. Glenn
C-101plowerpower 1,606 #8 Posted June 3, 2014 thanks for the headsup, atleast it wasn't an horse that caused it, anyway, i think this is a good one for the bumps and bruises section. Koen
Wishin4a416 2,191 #9 Posted June 3, 2014 Wow. Could have been a lot worse. No one was hurt at least. I am pretty picky about that myself. I take my leaf blower and blow off the machines after every use.
dodgemike 52 #10 Posted June 3, 2014 Was always taught years ago to give the heavy equip. a cool down at the end of the day. This was while some of us actually cleaned our machines, looked for wear etc. I may be anal but I warm my Horse and hydro up and run her at a fast idle for at least 5 min. after a hard workout. Wheel-N-It 2,976 #11 Posted June 3, 2014 Just curious here; Does the EPA now require catalytic converters on mowers now? If so, these things hold a dangerous amount of heat.
Theroundhousernr 590 #12 Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) I know California has added lots of emissions add on to mowers. I don't think a catalytic converter is one of them. I pretty sure they plumb the tank vent back to the intake to be reburned to lessen the impact on the environment. GlenPettit 1,717 #13 Posted June 3, 2014 (edited) Also, for safety, look up when mowing . . . Don't know if any of you mow airstrips but be careful if you do. http://www.wsoctv.co...orsville/nfjFF/ Edited June 3, 2014 by GlenPettit

seuadr 489 #15 Posted June 4, 2014 i would really wonder about some other kind of issue with that - grass clippings won't ignite from radiated heat until above 550 F and even then are not able to substain an open flame without being fanned. I think you are barking up the right tree with recall information. there shouldn't be any external parts on a mower except the exhaust that is reaching temperatures above 550 F.
