Butch 194 #26 Posted June 3, 2014 Van I was wondering if I was going to have to put a sub panel in and throw in a 15 amp breaker for the 14 awg. It's an easy fix. I just hope I can find a small tiny panel. I've been waiting for Mike to tear me a part! Thanks.

Ask anyone here on Redsquare and they'll tell ya I'm sweet as pie ! Was the breaker in the house panel reduced from the 40a double pole breaker it probably was originally when it fed your AC unit to a 20a single pole breaker because of the 12 gage wire? And I agree about a small 4 circuit panel in the shed to protect the smaller 14 gage wire you used with a 15a breaker. Just remember that a sub panel would need an isolated ground from the neutral (unlike the main panel in your house) to be code compliant. I would have the lights on one 15a breaker and the plugs on a separate 20a breaker. As long as I'm tossing out opinions.....I would get rid of the GFCI plug at the house end and just splice thru the 12 gage. Then install the GFCI at the first plug and use the load screws to protect the plugs downstream from it. A GFCI can be problematic outside, less so if its inside. Fordiesel69 271 #28 Posted June 3, 2014 Really nice. Can't wait to get mine. Just bought a house on the 29th of May and have set a 2K limit on an outbuilding. The problem I have is the area where I want it, is not accessible via a truck. So I think it has to be built.

Well actually Butch since you are feeding the structure with only one 120volt circuit you are not required to have an overcurrent device protecting that circuit at the point of entry to the building. Per the NEC, a general purpose single pole switch will suffice and meet code. However since you have stepped down on your wire size in the building, then you would be required by code to do one of two things. Either install a 15amp breaker in the building, or install a general purpose single pole switch in the building nearest the point of entry of the cable, and step down the size of your overcurrent device protecting the entire circuit to a 15 amp circuit breaker. To me, installing a small panel box in the building makes much more sense as you can then add an additional circuit for something else a a later time. Also as Mike said, remember to isolate the neutral (white) conductor from the equipment grounding conductor. Not doing this will have you taking grounded return voltage and current back to the service panel of your house on both the equipment grounding conductor and neutral conductor. This won't burn your house down but its certainly not a good idea or practice.
Butch 194 #30 Posted June 4, 2014 Van I don't quite follow the isolating of the neutral. My neutral isn't grounded anywhere. In a 220 volt system is the neutral the ground? Mike the 1st receptacle out of the panel is the outdoor GFCI. We also use that receptacle. But you're saying move it to the first receptacle inside the shed? Uh oh. When I ran the 14/2 for the receptacles I spliced into the 12 awg and went one way and spilced in again and went a different way. Is that wrong. Mike I'm not on here a whole lot but when you go away these guys really party.
