RedRider 120 #1 Posted May 30, 2014 I'm getting ready to repaint my Wheel Horse this weekend and have all of the pieces sandblasted down to bare metal. I was looking for any suggestions as far as the reassembly process and was wondering how other people go about this. The tractor is currently completely disassembled and I have new stainless steel hardware for reassembly. I was curious if it would be better to prime and paint all of the parts individually then reassemble and hand paint all of the nuts bolts and fasteners, or to prime the parts and then partially assemble to frame, dash tower, etc, before applying my top coat of paint? With any luck I will have everything finished and ready in time for the big show.
wrightorchid 261 #2 Posted May 30, 2014 I would tend to do all of the pieces, apart, because there would be many places that you would not be able to cover properly.
pacer 3,177 #3 Posted May 30, 2014 You'll definitely get a more professional look doing the individual pieces - it is a bit more time consuming, finding enough places to lay out the pieces and get paint on them and then having pieces of tractor hanging every where with paint drying like clothes on the line, but IMO end result looks much better. Racinbob 11,925 #5 Posted May 30, 2014 Welcome to Red Square. I'd agree with the others about painting separately. Are you sure you want to paint the new stainless hardware? In most locations I really like the look of stainless. When I get to that point with my Surburban 400 rebuild I'll have quite a bit of stainless holding it together. Not original but I believe a restoration should be done as the individual likes it.
RedRider 120 #7 Posted May 30, 2014 (edited) Thanks for the suggestions so far. As for the hardware, I want to paint it all so that it is as original looking as possible. I did a previous garden tractor and painted all parts separately, but had to do a lot of touch up of wrinkled paint from tightening down some of the bolts. Also, the tractor has a Tecumseh H-60 and I was wondering if all of the engine components were originally red, or if anything remained unpainted or a different color? I know the muffler wouldn't be red, but I wasn't exactly sure about the correct color/paint application on the carburetor or the fuel line. Forest Road 594 #8 Posted May 30, 2014 What kind of pair are you using that moved during reassembly? Spray cans?
RedRider 120 #9 Posted May 30, 2014 For paint I'm using an epoxy primer (surfacer/sealer) and Valspar Tractor & Implement IH Red paint with hardener to be sprayed with an HVLP spray gun. I did get some of the rattle cans of the Valspar IH red in case I need to do some touch ups later or paint small parts here or there, but plan to use the spray gun for the majority of the tractor parts.
