IndianaMatt 34 #1 Posted May 30, 2014 Found this 414-8 suffering out in the weather with the hood up and no rear rubber. Stopped knocked and wrote a check, ran home got trailer. Worked on her for about 30 minutes and threw on some rubber. Then yes I mowed the yard. Im still not sure what was wrong with her, I threw on a push button to start it. Not a good idea I know but well I just had to see her run. I gave $250 for her she runs and mowed decent. Also put on a new choke cable the old one was rusted up and frozen. IndianaMatt 34 #10 Posted June 7, 2014 Well im not sure what to do with it. Everything works and it mows fine but seems a bit low on power...
steelman 252 #11 Posted June 7, 2014 I have a 414-8 and love it to death. Magnum runs fantastic. Sounds like you got a real steal with that one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
IndianaMatt 34 #12 Posted June 7, 2014 Had mine out mowing this week. It has a 42 in deck and it seemed to really have to work at it. The grass w as tall but not too tall if you know what i mean. I had to go over the yard twice, my b80 could have handled it fine with the 36in rear discharge. I just thought the 14 would have performed better. Maybe something wrong??? jdleach 525 #13 Posted June 7, 2014 Matt, go over all the regular suspects: points, condenser, carb adjustment, etc. Fully grease and lube the mower. Make sure the air filter is clean. A 14 should literally howl through your grass with little effort, even when ill. My 312-8 handles grass (weeds) as high as the hood without much grumble, and it has pretty bad blow-by. Retired Wrencher 5,773 #14 Posted June 7, 2014 Well im not sure what to do with it. Everything works and it mows fine but seems a bit low on power... Matt try running some Seafoam thru it for a full tank. if not better try a tune up and fix he air cleaner. You may have some grass in the carb. Gary B..... Tankman 3,523 #15 Posted June 7, 2014 Nice find! Price was great too. Don't you feel a little guilty infecting the young lady with Wheel Horse Addiction?
Kelly 1,033 #16 Posted June 7, 2014 Try a head gasket, and make sure the head is flat/true, the magnums don't have points, so nothing to deal with there, but tweak the carb settings, unless it has the non adjustable waloro on it, some are adjustable, I myself put caters on if it's a keeper, check to see if the throttle shaft has lots of play in it, walboros have a seal in the top and when bad will not run right and can loose power
jdleach 525 #17 Posted June 7, 2014 Duh! That's right, no points. I tend to look at all Kohlers as K series engines.
IndianaMatt 34 #18 Posted June 8, 2014 I tried some sea foam, cleaned the carb, put new plug, new air filter, oil change, checked out throtle linkage, cleaned gas tank, and put on new fuel filter... Still sickly... She smokes just a tad on start up, dosent seem to use much oil, and sucks gas like crazy. I just feel like she should have way more power. Im trying to mow in high first or second gear and she will not do it. I dont have the time to tear her down right now. Im knee deep in the 417 project. WH nut 553 #19 Posted June 8, 2014 If she is sucking gas sounds like its over fueling. Time to clean the carb.
jdleach 525 #20 Posted June 8, 2014 Agree with nut, sounds like it could be carb. related. My 312-8 smokes a bit, uses some oil, etc., but still has a lot of power. Mows good in high-2nd. In another thread, it was mentioned that you should also make sure that Wide Open Throttle is at the correct RPM, and not low. Kohler and Wheel Horse both state that these engines will not develop full horsepower except at 3600 RPM.
Kelly 1,033 #21 Posted June 8, 2014 again put a head gasket in it, I've pulled heads off hundreds of K series engines and 99% of them need head gaskets, and the head trued up. then do the carb work.

IndianaMatt 34 #23 Posted June 9, 2014 oh yes I got my moneys worth for sure. Now just need to get her running right so I can rebuild my everyday tractor. Mowing with the B-80 just takes to long. But at this point the B-80 is easier.
