10 hp kohler issues

Recommended Posts

OK, the old Wheel Horse has been getting a little picky lately and it happens to be at my second home where I have limited time and access.

Anyway, it started last fall and is continuing into this spring but it will start and run but at times I've had to keep the choke fully opened to keep it running. Other times I close the choke fully and it will run/cut pretty good but as I run it, over time, it will start to bog and then need more choke. It will at times surge (rev up then down) a little when idling. Pulled the plug and it was pretty carboned up.

I'm sure it could be a number of things and I have played with some of the carb adjustments (without knowing exactly which adjustment does what) but I was hoping that there might be some quick checks to either eliminate possibilities or isolate problems. Because I have made some carb adjustments I don't really know if I am anywhere near where I need to be with any of them so...any ideas on were to start?

It's a 10 hp Kohler single that was rebuilt (by someone else) about 5-6 years ago.

I should probably start by draining the gas and cleaning the screen/replacing the filter but all ideas are appreciated.

Thanks in advance gang.

Start at the tank and work up to the carb.

You will have a valve under the tank that cloggs, up, then you have a fuel pump that gets weak, then you have a carb that could be getting green from the ethanol.  Start with the basics first.

You should be able to find an owner's manual for your engine under the "Manuals" tab here on RedSquare.  That will show you what the various adjustment needles are for, and where to set them initially.

Draining the old gas and refilling with fresh is a great idea, especially if the tractor has been sitting for a long time.  Have you cleaned the carburetor recently?  How old are the fuel lines?
