Rattling Clutch Linkage

Usually I can diagnose about any problem in a mechanical device, but I am not sure on this one.

Got a 1985 312-8 with a rattling clutch linkage. The belt appears to have been changed pretty recently by the PO, and the idler pulley seems tight, though rather noisy. But when the tractor is idling, the clutch and linkage vibrates and rattles. Makes a hell of a racket. When using the tractor, I generally just rest my foot gently on the pedal.

Is there supposed to be a counter spring or some such other mechanism to keep the linkage under small tension? Or is there an adjustment that the manual does not mention?

There is a clutch pedal return spring. Maybe yours is shot. Its easy to find with one end hooked to the tranny, look under the left side.

you might have a problem with the spring, but that would also cause belt slippage and loss of drive.....more than likely its probably a worn out idler shaft thats loose in the frame. that and a idler pulley that is noisy, which probably means its dry- allowing it to stick every now and again, only contributing more to the movement of the idler arm and shaft movement. i would go through the clutch linkage and belt assemblies, checking everything. reach under the tractor and grab the shaft thats above the transmission mounting bolts, try to move it. if loose you might need to replace the shaft or bush the holes in the frame. also temporarily squirt some lube in the bearing on the idler pulley and see if it quietens down and smooths out a little. 

 

you say the belt was recently replaced, oem belt or aftermarket? is the belt out of shape at all as it travels around the pulleys?
