canam1991 2 #1 Posted September 23, 2008 can you buy any tractor supply tiller for a d 250 or does it have to be wheel horses tiller?
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted September 23, 2008 I'm not sure, but I think I read that WH pto's turn the wrong way, so if that is true it needs to be WH, but a 250 I'm really not sure. :banghead:
canam1991 2 #3 Posted September 23, 2008 i was just wondering but i'll need a 3 pt before i think about that...
Rideawaysenior 25 #4 Posted September 27, 2008 Any Cat 0 tiller will work on a D250. The PTO rotation question resers to the other D Series machines.

wh500special 2,262 #6 Posted September 27, 2008 My D250 is 200 miles away so I can't verify this first hand for you, but I am 99.9% sure that the rotation and speed on the D250's rear PTO is unique to that tractor and is therefore NOT compatible with standard category 0 or limited cat 1 hitches/PTO's. On the D-autos, the PTO turns 2000 rpm in a clockwise direction On the D250 I am pretty sure it spins 1000 rpm in a counterclockwise direction. The tiller designed for this tractor only fits the D250...nothing else. It lacks a top link and has heavy "snorkel" that connects the PTO to the tiller AND stabilizes the tiller. Most everything you are going to find on any ag equipment lot is going to have the ASAE standard 540 rpm in a clockwise rotation. A speed reducing/dirction changing gearbox was available for the D250 to convert from 1000 CCW to 540 CW, but it alters the location of the PTO shaft enough that it is only to be used with stationary equipment. You can find 2000 rpm, CW tillers from other manufacturers to work with the D-autos, but finding something that will be "plug and play" for the D250 is much tougher to do. Before you go to TSC and buy a tiller, please verify the direction of your shaft's rotation and let me know if I am wrong. Steve
Rideawaysenior 25 #7 Posted September 27, 2008 Yes but Tractor supply and Northern tool sell tillers for 1000rpm applications. There are several other manufacturers that have 1000 rpm settings on the rear PTO. As far as the tiller rotation, I was told it was the same other applications. My D250 is still apart so until I get the motor in it We'll have to wait and see.
wh500special 2,262 #8 Posted September 27, 2008 I haven't seen 1000 rpm tillers this small...had no idea they were available but good to know! The 1000 rpm Cw ag standard came to be when ag tractors started getting more powerful. if you up the speed on the shaft, you can carry the same horsepower through at a reduced torque. So to keep things manageable size the started going with 1000 rpm in some applications. many of the imported and grey market tractors have multispeed shafts, but I never really looked into them to see if US implements were available in the speeds other than 540. i think the direction of rotation is going to be the killer here. It might not be possible or wise, but i suppose if you find a 1000 rpm tiller you can run it backwards and reverse the tines... Steve
Jim_M 179 #9 Posted September 27, 2008 I'm not 100% sure anymore, it's been years since I sold my D-250, but I think the pto shaft is metric. Like I say I'm not 100% sure anymore, but it seems like it wasn't a standard size or maybe sthe splines were different.
baerpath 517 #10 Posted September 28, 2008 D 250 pto speeds are front 1500 ccw, mid 1500 cw, rear 1000 ccw 6 splined shaft Smaller than a regular 540 shaft There are D250 tillers avaliable. Why not just buy a correct one? It might cost a little more up front but you would have the correct tiller for it. Duane
sshell 8 #11 Posted September 28, 2008 Farmall Cub PTO rotates backwards as well. With some fabricating one could work.
