a4sport 0 #1 Posted May 19, 2014 Just got my grandpa's 1969 Commander V7 1-4741 home today. Got it running with a new battery. Made the 3 hour trip home with it in the trailer and started cutting grass with it right away. Even got to take my sons for a ride on the back of it like I used to do when I was little. Issues I ran into were: 1. Ran out of gas on a slight incline. Filled the tank again half way and couldn't get it to start again. Battery went dead??? and I had to jump it. I got it to start with the choke on, but it dies out when I turn the choke off. 2. The belts are very worn. Any long grass that I ran into shut the blades off. I'm going to try and look for belt lenghts that I need for replacements, but if anyone knows what I need off the top of their head, please let me know. 3. Throttle cable seems to be binding and thinking I'm going to need a replacement. Any leads on one would be great. I'll get some pics up of it as soon as I can. Thing is in pretty nice shape. Deck is nice and solid. One of the "tails" for the hood is broken off, but I still have it to weld back on. Thanks for any help. Great to own my first Horse! a4sport 0 #2 Posted May 19, 2014 I'm pretty sure that I've figured out the belt size (74" x1/2" V belt) and will pick up some carb cleaner and go thru the whole thing to get that part figured out. The battery doesn't seem to be charging and wondering if it was installed backwards by my dad. the positive terminal on the battery has a wire running to the side of the motor (looks like a ground) and the negative side running up to the ignition and starter. Is that set up right, or does it need to be switched?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,475 #3 Posted May 19, 2014 1/2" x 74" is the correct belt. Wiring should be (-) to ground. Garry
a4sport 0 #4 Posted May 19, 2014 That's what I figured. Battery was not holding a charge and upon further inspection it didn't look to be connected right. Plan on getting the belt today, carb cleaned out, and hope to be cutting grass again in no time.
Kegler 68 #5 Posted May 19, 2014 On the throttle, did you try giving it a turn counterclockwise? Many had a friction locking cable instaled. If you get tired of messing with it I'm not that far from you (Marion area) and would take it off your hands for the right price.
a4sport 0 #6 Posted May 19, 2014 The throttle cable is something that I just end up replacing in the near future. It has a pretty bad kink in it. If it weren't for being my grandpas Kegler, I might take you up on it if things become much more of a headache. This'll be something that I end up fixing any little thing that's wrong with it just to keep it in the family. My boys have already had a good time driving it around the yard just like I used to do.
