Kohler M12 Gear Whine........Could it be the side bearings?

Put new rings in this engine over the winter, and the inside looked to be in great shape.  However I can hear a definite gear whine from the flywheel side.  Any ideas?

I was thinking it may be a worn flywheel side ball bearing.

I think I'd take the tins off and listen again. I'm certainly not an expert but it doesn't sound like a bearing to me. More like something is rubbing.

Did that when I first bought it.  Not the problem.  Its internal.  So it could be side bearings, cam gear, gov gear, or balance gear.

Almost sounds like the starter isn't disengaging from the flywheel.

I verified that it is disenguaging.  It is internal to the crankcase, just having touble narrowing it down.

Lets just assume it is not the side bearings, but it is internal, what else would make a sound like that?

I think you've answered your own question. Gear whine. When you re-ringed it , did you spec all the clearances..governor gear, crank end play, cam end play and those pesky balance gears?

If not, tear back into it before the block gets ventilated. Make sure the main bearings are still free.

The bearing plate and shroud act as an amplifier which would make you think it's on the flywheel side.

Is it possible it's the balance gears ( if it has them) ?

I would think if it were a side bearing you could feel some roughness turning it over with the plug out.
