OK guys, Bought the thing and its home. I think I got a pretty good deal because the engine cooling shroud was so filled with acorns and mouse nests we could hardly get it to turn over with a wrench. Battery is junk.  I made an offer that was accepted, and brought it home and removed the fan screen and was amazed at how much crap mice brought into it. Tommorrow I will remove the cowling and see if I can clean it out...its turning pretty smooth now and I feel good compression, but can really only go back and forth as theres still some stuff blocking it from turning smoothly all the way over. Just hoping its not a dropped valve or something really bad, but, I feel reasonable good about it. It has a P216 onan engine, hydro drive and deck lift. rear discharge deck looks about 48" but I believe the model is 78350, tractor #73421 4900422 serial number. Can someone tell me what year this tractor is. Once I get her goin' again I will want to get a recycler deck or convert kit for this one. What do we think?post-13073-0-80781100-1400373195_thumb.jpost-13073-0-55248000-1400373242.jpg

I think you got a pretty nice tractor there. I just picked up one like it 2 weeks ago. The tin on that engine is difficult to remove. Make sure you remove the hood to make it easier to do. Like you I found so much junk inside the engine covers I could not imagine that it would run long because of the heat buildup. How many hours on the meter?  Had a few ele3ctrical problems but finally got her running and cut grass with it yesterday. Today I cut part of a field where the grass was 16 inches high. Had to run it slow so as not to miss any but it sure did the job without a moan or groan.

Looks good from here unless you paid more than $400 I'd say your ok, even if it don't run, I see a $250+ deck if it's as nice as it looks

I'm pretty sure that's a 1994, and it's a 42" RD deck, get the recycler insert and you're good to go!  It looks like it's sat outside for a while, but I think it''' dean up nicely.  I have a 1994 416H as well and I love it!  There doesn't seem to have the issues with the valves as the P220 does.

yes Karl is right its a 1994......

73421 (416-H) - Toro 416-H Garden Tractor, 1994 (4900001-4999999)

just be careful turning it over if it won't turn easy a full revolution. you might have something internal stopping it from doing a full circle, but for your sake, lets hope not........

looks like it will clean up nice, the 416 is definitely my favorite 1990s tractor....

Well tomorrow is another day and well see how she goes. When I turn the engine over, with a wrench and it stops...it does not have a metallic sound like  metal on metal....seams to be maybe some big glob of some mouse nest wont pass through a narrow area of the shrouding......at least that's what I am hoping..................Just out of curiosity....is a 520 a bigger unit or just a bigger engine, I just missed one go at an auction...same price as what I paid for this one.......$200, and apx..and same condition, also an ONAN engine....but slightly more  crappie deck.

Newer 520's have a swept forward axle, reduced effort steering, 1" front spindles, 10.50 rear tires, gauges etc...  With the exception of a 60" deck, your 416 will do the same work!

Have you tried removing the plugs? If the plugs are in it, it might be that there oil or water in the cylinders or even gasoline. Just a thought.

More manuals for the 1994 416-H

If you search the manuals library for 73421 there are more for 1994 but it may take a couple of days for them to show up.

I figured it was a REASONABLY safe investment. Anyhow, today I loosened the shroud so I could do a reasonably good vacuuming of the area, and wow what a mess! Mouse nests galore, hay, dirt, and lots of acorns. Looks like it NEVER got a decent cleanout. Oil however was VERY clean and the hydro fluid seamed VERY clean as well....no indication of water in either. I got encouraged and turned the engine over with a socket wrench...got tight in one spot so I went the other direction...back and fourth a few times each time gaining ground and now it spins pretty good. Took the plugs out one at a time and one cylinder has great compressin and one  is a bit weeker, so mayby that cylinder is still a little dry, or rings are stuck....who knows. Tommorrow I will put some jumpers on it and see if it sounds good turning over and to check for spark....if alls good, will toss in some fuel and see what happens!

i never like to force an engine to turn over, could cause other problems or damage...... you could have had a valve that was stuck open a little. that would explain why you could go only so far in one direction and then in the other. could have slowly worked it loose...... i would check them if you have the heads off. if i get an engine that turns over like that and won't do a full revolution, removing a head usually will show up which one is stuck, (or expose another problem that is causing it to get stuck)

ive also had corrosion and junk sitting in the upper cylinder and stopping a piston from reaching tdc.

That's amazing. The one I just got had 520 hours on it. Had been sitting 5 years. I sprayed oil in the plug holes and then let it sit for two days. Left the plugs out and cranked it a few times before I put the plugs back in. The Gas tank was bone dry, like someone had drained it when they last used it. Took some turns getting fuel up to the carburetor. I actually squirted some gas in the carburetor to prime it and it fired right away. Smoked a bit till it burned away the oil and now it is !00% good.

You should also remove the shroud and degrease , wash the fins.  Vacuuming is not enough.

After running it, the compression should come back a little.

Thanks Guys,  My intent would be to find out the general "run worthiness" of this horse. If it fires and seams decent,I will  probably run very lightly over the summer and then pull the engine and take all the shrouds off, lap the valves , rebuild the carb, new gas lines filters etc over the fall/winter. It is much cleaner now under the shrouds than it has been in years...I am sure of that. Will pull the plugs this am and squirt a little "marvel mystery" in there and try cranking...without plugs,,later and see if spark is there and what it sounds like. Because it is  a flathead I knew having a hung valve hitting the piston would not be an issue....would only mean lack of compression. My guess is I have a dry cylinder or maybe a little corrosion started on a cylinder wall....and possible stuck rings.............either way a little oil should clean it out pretty well without having to do a major teardown......(hopefully). My experience with gas engines is more torward old one lungers...........but.....should not be ALL THAT DIFFRENT.

Thanks Everyone, It was easier than I thought to get it goin' I am VERY impressed with the quality of these old machines! Built to last with Iron and steel!

If I want to get some impliments for it how can I tell what fits...is there a certain model # to look for on the mower decks, tillers plows and snownblowers? I see a lot of attachments at swap meets just don't want to buy stuff that wont work with it. I am needing a mulch (recycler) kit for my rear discharge deck, is that still available at old fashioned toro/wheelhorse dealers or is it obsolete and can only get from other collecters?  Thanks again
