Hodge71 690 #1 Posted May 13, 2014 (edited) Well I guess things have been too good to be true. I was able to cut the grass in its entirety once with the 18 and the 60 inch deck I adapted from a 520. Last week it ran great for 4 hours of mowing. This week it almost made it 3 before I started smelling something afoul. Over heating possibly, burnt paint...hmmm I stopped numerous times and checked things out deck bearings, mule drive bearings, everything looks ok but I still smell something hot when mowing. Thought maybe it was just due to ambient temps being 80 on Sunday when I mowed instead of 66 when I mowed the last time. Well I stopped one more time, flipped the lever back to shut the mower off and hmmmm....mower still running...open the hood and check to be sure I didnt shear the pin ont he handle nad the PTO arm is moving in conjunction with the handle yet the mower is still spinning. I shut off the tractor and look at the PTO.....low and behold the entire back of the pulley is now black instead of red. I couldnt even touch the PTO it was so hot. I dug into it last night and it wont come off the crank end. Bolt is out PTO disconnected even though it has nothing to do with the pulley...any ideas how to get this off and what could have made it get so hot? Mower has run fine for the 7 hours of mowing other than the fact I burned a half quart of oil since the last oil change only 10 hours ago. I'm aggravated to say the least... Thanks in advance. Ill check back after I get home from work Edited May 13, 2014 by hodge71
squonk 44,684 #3 Posted May 14, 2014 (edited) I'm not familiar with the D PTO set up. On my C-160 i noticed smoke out of my PTO bell and it was hot. Outer brg. started to go. Just guessing I'd say the inner brg on yours seized and it myay be very difficult to remove. You might have to cut things off. Hodge71 690 #4 Posted May 15, 2014 Mike, There is no way Im gonna cut an entire clutch assembly off the snoot of the engine. No way, no how. These things are hard enough to find parts for and to destroy everything is not an option. A bearong wouldnt be bad if need be but the whole clutch assembly must be saved somehow I guess I will regroup n take another poke at it to see what happens. Looks like I'll be mowing 6 acres with the C-160 8 Speed and 42" RD deck for awhile..... .......6 hours later
Hodge71 690 #5 Posted June 10, 2014 (edited) Got it off with my 5 ton hydraulic gear puller....Rebuilt the entire clutch assembly aand put her all back together...whoever had this apart once before was an animal. Parts missing, shaft bad so they beat it with a punch to make high spots so the bearing would fit...A total puss case. But after some creative fabwork weled the pulley and machined it to fit a metric SKF bearing instead of the $139 factory bearing. New spring washers, 2 new clutch faces and it wont slip at all. The engine will stall or belt will break before that happens...ask me how I know...LOL Edited June 11, 2014 by hodge71
