Nick82 0 #1 Posted May 11, 2014 hey guys I'm new to the forum love the info that's on here. I got a 1989 312-8 been doing some work to it. I had the shroud off the flywheel and I noticed the starter gear is engaged on the flywheel. I never had looked at it before. The starter seems to work fine turns the motor over I'm just not sure if its supposed to be like that or not, I would think not but figure I'd ask the experts. Thanks in advance
Save Old Iron 1,571 #2 Posted May 11, 2014 the starter gear should definitely disengage with the flywheel - clean and apply a dry lube to the starter shaft / gear
Racinbob 11,883 #4 Posted May 16, 2014 Welcome to the forum. Also make sure the spring isn't broken or missing. The gear runs out the shaft and engages the flywheel when you engage the starter then the spring returns it.
Fordiesel69 271 #5 Posted May 16, 2014 Once the engine start, the force should kick the gear back in. This happens when the battery gets low. Perfectly normal. If it does not go back in once the engine starts you will need to clean and relubricate. One drop of mobil 1 5w-20 will work in a pinch. Dry lube will work better.
