520 Fuse Box Torture

Recommended Posts

Back again to my least favorite topic, 520 electrical adventures.

I picked up a new to me 520 in Madison yesterday.

Dug into it today, power washing, plugs, fluids, filters.

Things were going well until I attacked a rat's nest of a fuse box.  Full of gunk, and no lights.

I assumed it was the fuse.  None of them were the right amperage.

Replaced them all with the proper ones, and cleaned the contacts as best I could.

It wouldn't start until I fiddled with the 25 amp fuse, then it fired right up.  Still no lights.

As I fiddled with the fuse, I accidentally pulled it out, causing a momentary stall.  Pushed it right back, and the engine recovered, but the tachometer and vacume guage both went out.

Now, it will not start.  Tach and vac are both out, but the 25 and 15 amp fuses are working.  (don't know about the 30)

What have I done?

Try it again in the morning. If one of the relays closed and held up, it may take it a few hours to release. If you followed my adventure into the 416-8 fuse box, (I don't recommend it as it has made some members eyes bleed after a few minutes), my fuse block was totally hosed so I installed individual fuse holders in it. Thought all was good until I switched my lights on. No lights and I lost my charge gauge. The 15 amp fuse never blew!

In a few hours, I could fire it up and all was well. It was the relay! This is just a hunch as you may have burned a wire off a connector, or the fuse block contacts arched and are messed up again, etc etc.

Boovuc,

Where did you get your fuse holders, and how much of a PIA was it to trade them out.

I think I will be forced to do the same.

I was going to buy another fuse block but there is so little room in there without tearing everything including the kitchen sink out that I opted for single fuse holders. You can buy them from any auto parts store or even Lowes. You will need to make sure they can handle currents up to 30+ amps. I also opted for the holders with a cap on them to keep debris out of the contact points.

On mine, the 30 and 20/25amp circuits need to be bridged due to each sharing power. (This is with my 416. Check the schematic on your 520). I didn't get the holders like we see on the 300 series or C-Series that have a clip on them to hang from the frame. I just used Velcro strips and hung them from the frame where I can check them without tearing the battery out. I bought genuine Velcro that I know will stay put a long time! My wiring issues with this tractor aren't related to the the fuse block anymore. I wish it was that simple!  :)

What are the model and serial numbers on this 520? Would like to look up the wiring diagram.

Garry,

It is a '94 520.

Model 73501

Serial 4901137

By the way, I let it sit overnight, had a few adult beverages, and cried myself to sleep after the Blackhawks game.

It still won't start.  Fuse block comes out next to look at the wires.

I was having issues with my fuse box. Thought I would have to replace it but was able to "straighten" out the female pins to make good contact with the fuses.  Found a couple of guys on eBay that sell Packard Delphi fuse boxes the same or very similar to the fuse box came equipped on the 520s.  Do a search for Packard Delphi Fuse Box and you'll find them.

Good Luck.
