312-8, ran fine yesterday, won't start today

I just got this tractor and I'm working it doing general maintenance and going over everything. When I first got it there was a charge problem, got that fixed, but even with the charge problem if I jumped it off everything ran fine, started up in only a few cranks.

I rinsed everything off yesterday to get the dead grass off of it to check out the body conditions. After I rinsed it and checked everything out I ran it around for 10-15 minutes then parked it.

Today I went out and greased the deck and started taking the blades off to sharpen, the far left blade just won't come off. Gonna get some pb blaster or wd-40 to try and break it loose. I know its tight enough it shattered my 12" adjustable! But I digress....

After giving up on the last blade for today I adjusted the PTO pulley brake using a .012 feeler gauge like the manual says to. I then adjusted the rear brake until tires skid then another 1/2 turn. When I got done I hopped on to take a lap around the house and test the brake out (before I'd press the brake all the way in and barely slow).

Kept cranking and cranking, never would catch. I pulled the plug, looked good, smelled like gas, I could see wet down in the chamber so I'm getting fuel. Drained the carb and then cranked some, got fuel again...

Held the plug to ground, plenty of strong spark. Air filter is clean (just put one on) and pre-cleaner is clean and dry.

So what am I missing? I've got fuel, spark and air. So easy a caveman could do it, right? Why can't I make fire!?

The manual isn't much help, Spark plug firing? Check, Ignition system? I suppose. No fuel in tank? Got fuel. Fuel valve closed? ...Got fuel. Improper carb adjustment or dirty carb? I suppose the carb could be dirty, but I've never had one so dirty it didn't even TRY to start. I never once heard it start to catch.

I'm figuring I'll pull the carb and clean it, probably needs it anyway. Just posting to see if anyone has an enlightened thought that I'm missing. As it is now I've killed the battery so back to the charger for it.

Check your safety switches.

After adjusting your PTO brake, make sure you set it back to "off" (Though if that was the case I don't think you would get any spark)

Will it run spraying starter fluid in the intake? The only reason I say this is if water somehow got in the gas and ruined it while you were washing.

Otherwise maybe just some old junk got in the carb and plugged up the needle holes. Have you replaced fuel filter and lines in all of this? Wouldn't be a bad idea and its pretty cheap.

Just throwing out some guesses...

Plug is bad from getting it wet.  It is sparking, but under the cylinder pressure it is not.

I have ruined countless plugs by washing.

Haven't replaced fuel filter. The lines look and feel pretty new but I'll replace those as well. Guess it'll be to the parts store for a plug, filter and fuel line tokorrow.

Hmm, before I left for work I tried again, fired right up. Guess maybe it was flooded or theven car is dirty. I'll still be replacing all that tomorrow and cleaning the carb just in case.
