Jman6 1 #1 Posted September 18, 2008 I have the 1991 312-8 and was wondering does the engine have to be running for the headlights to work? I am in the middle of replacing the toggle switch and the lights are not working, could be cause I am not sure I have it connected to the right wires or just cause they are burned out. When I bought it it did not have the toggle switch in it so I am not even sure exactly what wires it is supposed to go to. There are two empty wire slots that are not connected. One has two pink wires going in the clip and the other has a black one and I think a white one. Am at work so I am going by memory. Thanks, Jman
kj4kicks 154 #2 Posted September 18, 2008 The switch needs to be in the "run" position, but the engine doesn't have to be running.
kpinnc 14,641 #3 Posted September 19, 2008 Jman, I rewired my 310's headlights to run from the battery. I'm not reccomending you do that, but it does make things a bit simpler. Also, just one bad bulb will prevent either from working in some cases. My lights were in series with one another originally, and that just adds to the confusion when they quit working... Jman6 1 #4 Posted September 19, 2008 Kevin, mine are the same... Will check into it. Thanks for the replies on this. Now I just gotta figure out which set of wires go to the toggle switch. Jman
bitten 134 #5 Posted September 22, 2008 Hey JMAN I have a 310-8 and the engine has to be running for the lights to work. There are many different ways to make them work, just keep in mind to put a fuss in line with them. I would try to get a wiring diagram and do it the way the factory did it if at all possible. I know that sometimes when we get a used horse the wiring has been hacked up by someone else and then you have to do whatever you can. Good Luck...P.J.
