warner pto clutch not engageing

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I have a early 1970's Bronco 14 wheelhorse that is giving me problems with activating the clutch. I checked the wiring and seen the power going to the pto comes from the cigarette lighter, which initially comes from the "L" contact on the ignition switch. I first checked the lighter, and realized it didn't work I then took the wire off the L contact and clipped on a test light to check the current and turned the key to the position for the pro to engage, but I got no light. The ignition switch went bad last year, so i bought this one and tested it for continuity and all contacts seemed to work. The tractor starts up fine otherwise. Any help is much appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

If you have the four (4) position ignition switch, be sure it is in the 2nd position (acc) when turning on the pto.

The "L" or "A" (lights or accessories) terminal is hot in the 2nd position.

Thanks for the replies guys! :-) the ignition switch patent # is 3497644. Chazm, thanks for the manuals! I have the original that came new with the tractor, which has a schematic, but I want to see if the ones you posted will show me more. Oldredrider your correct, I must have the key turned one time to the L contact and have the toggle switch turned on to engage the pto. I've tried it that way, but still no current coming from that contact. When I tested the switch before installing it, all the contacts tested ok. I'm going to buy another ignition switch to see if that will resolve it.

i have a 312-A with a kohler 12 hp mag in it today when i went to use it, it started right up no problem moved it to put the deck under it and turned the key off and the tractor kept running now partly because of thing i learned or at least had reaffirmed on r s i knew that the single wire on the switch was the kill wire for the magneto. so i took a screw driver and shorted to ground and got it to shut off after playing with it for a while i determined that the new switch i just put on less than a year ago was bad. seems the ground terminal was not grounding to the switch. i tried to pinch the terminal tight and did get it to work for a short while but not for long. so i guess i while be ordering a new switch for it real soon. so my point is just because the switch is new don't rule it out as the problem, good luck and keep us updated how you make out

Thanks ericj for your thought on my problem. I'm going to take the switch and re test it to make sure it works on all contacts. The switch works fine for starting the engine, but the the lights, cigarette lighter and pto do not work. I believe I ruled out ground issues, because the schematic shows the switch grounds itself out on the body of the tractor. I should be seeing current readings from the contacts themselves I think? I will definitely let you guys know what I find!
