Frozen hitch pin

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a different idea on how to remove a frozen hitch pin ? Even soaked with PB for a couple of weeks it wont budge. I am reluctant of heavy hitting and I have heated the tranny in that area but am also concerned with that. Besides the above and the heavy cursing is there any other way?

I had to cut mine with a sawzall, then I was able to hit it with a 5/8" diameter punch and hammer without mushrooming the end. I pushed from the smaller side of the transmission toward the larger side to offer more support. There is another post on here from Trouty56 about drilling the pin partially and pushing it through.

There ain't no easy way out. Last one I did I had to drill all the way through it laterally with a 1/2" bit then take a sawzall to cut a section out at 90°. Kinda wondering now if it was worth it since I just ended up selling the tractor.

With a sawzall, cut of the pin flush with the THIN side of trans case.  Center punch and dirll 1/8 pilot hole, then progressively 1/4 to 5/8".  The pin is 3/4" dia and comparitively soft material...it drills easily.  When you get it to 5/8" about 2" deep (or more), find a HARD grade 8 bolt 1/2" dia to fit in the hole, with the hex head of it protruding a little bit...3/8" or so.

Go find a LARGE HEAVY HAMMER...., SMACK the head of that bolt....that should get the pin to move a little bit. As it starts to move, pull out the bolt and stack washers (or a nut) in the hole to, effectively, lengthen the grade 8 bolt.

Proceed with hammer, cussing wildly as you go.

Easy there pardner'.....  ya don't want a Horse to kick back, to ya.  Keep your patience and long, and your temperence well oiled.  I use Michelob for the latter.

thing is, its not really the wheel horses fault.  :angry-cussingblack:

i guess you could blame all the previous owners the tractor has had.

the problem with the whole pin area is you have bare metal that water is allowed to get to (the gasket for the trans doesn't go all the way between those ears that the pin goes through) and slowly over time it gets stuck real good in there from corrosion etc.....

its just one of those things that lack of removal and/or preventative maintenance (putting some anti seize or oil on the pin) will cause over time.

even if you take a whole day to get the pin out, it probably took decades to get that way......

Sometimes an air gun with a flat bit can get it out with out mushrooming the end.  After that...it is time to cut it.  :eusa-think:

Heavy cussing. Been there with my steering wheel battle. Maybe a few more wacks. Try to shock it loose. You have tried what I would have. Good luck.

This doesn't help you out with your problem but here's what I've done on several tractors to prevent it from happening. With the pin out I drilled a small hole (1/8" - 3/16") from the top through to the pin hole. Every time I greased the tractor I'd put a drop of oil in the hole. Not much but just a drop or two. It wasn't enough to seep out and I never had a pin seize after that.

This is what I used. Bought it from HF.  Got the idea from another member and it worked nice. I can't even remember what this tools real purpose is.  All I did was Just soaked the pin good and let sit over night, put my impact wrench on this tool and let it do the work,  Took maybe five minutes to push it out . :handgestures-thumbupright:

What a battle this has been. I have never been so mad at a WheelHorse in my life.

Just went through the same ordeal myself last week on the 857. Then on top of that, I busted a hub. That was another 2 hour job to cut and chisel that off.

After you finally get it out, there are several things you can do to prevent this from happening in the future. I recall a thread where another member drilled and tapped a hole, and put in a Zerk grease filling. Or do as I do and coat the new pin with Never-seez.
