Kohler 418-A

Recommended Posts

I have a 314-8 with a Kohler Magnum, low hours, the engine sounds extremely powerful, and runs awesome.

I have a 418-A with a Kohler two cylinder, and it sounds like its almost electric compared to the 314.

It also burns oil.

I put the plow on the 418 and pushed some major stuff around like it was a freight train, yet it doesn't sound powerful.

Questions on the two cylinder Kohler.

Is the two cylinder with the hydro a quiet power house?

My understanding is the block is aluminum, so can you r&r the cylinders?

Is this engine an easy rebuild, or does it need some professional help?

Any input is appreciated as I have zero experience with this Kohler, just got it.

It just seems so odd that the 314 sounds so much better, louder, powerful-er.

Matt

The twin Magnums and the KT series Kohlers are not the easiest rebuilds but yes they can be rebuilt. Regardless of the aluminium block, they can be bored./sleeved. They are more expensive to rebuild verses the single cyl. Kohlers. The twins, (Onan or Kohler), produce smooth power. The Kohler singles have incredible torque. How loud the two are can come down to how bad or good your mufflers are but normally the twins are quieter than the singles.

Remember also that a hydro robs some horsepower due to running the pump, etc. So an 18 horse twin on the hydro and your 14 horse on a manual tranny will have very similar capabilities.
