what motor for workhorse 700?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a workhorse 700 in decent condition. The guy wanted $200 but I got it for $75. They guy said something was wrong with the clutch on the motor that came off a snapper...but I plan.on replacing it anyways. What's the best motor to use for these tractors?

It should have a 7 hp Tecumseh engine on it. But you can mount a small 7 or 8 hp. Kohler on it. A Briggs motor would work too. Good price on your 700, built in 1969 and only made one year, good score! Welcome to RedSquare!

Thanks the reply and welcome guys. I normally work on John Deere and snapper so this is my first wheel horse. But I really like it and want to do this one right

Would 10 go be too much for it? And any shaft size I need to make sure I stay at?

I have a newer 10 hp Tecumseh on my Workhorse 700. I don't have the tractor hood on it right now because I need to cut a small semi-circle out to clear the air-cleaner.

I may cut the hood, I may leave it off, I don't know for sure, but I still use it to work & play.

Oh, :WRS: and  :wwp:

Well I got the motor on it started tonight. Its a little rough but it runs. However it won't go into gear, just grinds when I try. What kind of clutch part should I be looking for?

Hi Curtis,

Make sure the belt guard is on it. The belt guard needs to be installed or the belt won't slip.

Welcome to Redsquare by the way!
