1277 advice

Recommended Posts

skimerhorn

Hello to all, I'm new here and looking to restore a 1277. This was my grandfather's mower, and I want to go back thru it and redo it so I can use it. It hasn't run in prob 10 years or so, but isn't locked up. I'm gonna try to see if I can get it running this weekend. But any tips? Once I get it mechanically sound, then I want to paint and decal it. I really don't know a lot about it, I never used before? So any information would be great, the body is in really good shape so that shouldn't be to bad. Thanks for reading my post, and any help you guys can give.

:WRS:   So cool that you have your grandfather's :wh:

Go to the "Manuals" tab at the top of the page and you can download the manual for the mower and the 1277 itself.

The best advice on starting a tractor that has been setting would be to change the oil, pull off the float bowl and clean the inside with some Seafoam Carb. spray. Drain the fuel system, replace the fuel filter, put in some fresh gas, make sure the tank shut off valve is open (ethonal free if you can find it ) remove the spark plug and crank it over to see if fuel is making it to the carb.,then hold the float up and crank it over to be sure it will cut off the fuel flow. Put in a new spark plug ( Champion H-10 ) and start it up. I bet it will run.

Is a 1277 a decent size? Hopefully it won't be to bad to get running, then I have to try to figure out how to put the deck on it. I have a complete deck, I think. I'm hoping all the brackets to mount it are still there. Does anyone suggest I replace the couch on the side where you engage the belts for the mower?

Mower decks are sized by their width of cut and the decks available in 1967 for the 1277 are

RL-367 is the 36" deck

RL-426 is the 42" deck

RL-486 is the 48" deck

The model numbers contain the width of cut and the year they were introduced. 6=1966 7=1967

I will try to post pics of the mower tomorrow when I start working on it. What is the external clutch for? Does that run the mower deck also, reason I'm asking is because its not hooked up right now? I hope some fresh gas and a baterry will get it goin, but we will see. Hoppe to report good news tomorrow.

I have a 1067 (my favourite tractor) that I found in a barn a few years ago.  It is essentially the same tractor as yours just a 10 hp instead of a 12 and I believe you have the automatic (or 3 speed) and I have an 8 speed.  Do yourself a favour before trying to start it and do the things that 953 nut mentioned above.  Mine hadn't run in a loooong time and had a bunch of issues.  I did get it running and it is great now but looking back I should have just replaced the fuel lines and cleaned the carb, changed the plug, cleaned the points etc. before messing with it and it would have saved me a lot of time.  If yours has sat for ten years with fuel in it it is likely going to have lots of cleaning to do as well.

If you are talking about the PTO, yes it is for the mower deck.  There are lots of posts about mounting the deck on your tractor and I am sure there will be other members chiming in on how to do it.  Good luck with it.  Like I said, my 67'is still my favourite tractor!

I have had very good results using Stens Carb re-do kit # 520-213 on the 10, 12, 14, and 16 hp Kohler engine carbs.  About $16 bux.  Not sure what the OEM kits may cost.

Find it here:

Have you seen the control handle friction adjustment and neutral adjustment in the operator manual?

Yea I'm gonna try that, just wasn't sure if there was anything else. It doesn't creep, if you don't have your hand on the lever it drops all the way.Wasnt sure if a neutral adjustment would fix that?

The is a C-160, but the PROBLEM shown here MAY be your issue.

This is often cracked or broken completely  letting the motion control move unexpectedly.

Thanks for all the help guys. One other thing I'm having trouble finding is a seat and steering wheel. Is there a company that sells remanufactured parts? Or should I go thru Toro? Other that those 2 things needing to be replaced, the mower isn't bent up or broke up. My plan is to put it all together and use it some this summers to see if there are any problems I need to fix. If its all good and nothing else I can find wrong, this winter I'm gonna pull it back down and try to paint it all.
