I have a 244-5 toro with a 14 hp onan engine.it won't turn over with the key but if I jump the starter it fires up.the starter has power all the time with key off or on.also it will start with the regulator unplugged.i'm confused! Any help would be great.

The regulator only has to do with the charging of the battery. You can start it without one, but the battery will not charge.

Sounds like you have a bad key switch. But there are a few other topics with the same problem in the "Electrical" section. Trace the wires as they show then report back with what you find.

I'm sure others will chime in here with some quick tips for testing :)

By the way, :WRS:

"The starter has power all the time"      If it did It would run continuously.   Do you mean the solenoid has power all he time , as it should ? One side of the solenoid switch is connected directly to the battery and the other side of the solenoid switch goes to the starter.  When you turn the ignition  switch to start, 12V should be sent to the small terminal on the solenoid switch causing it to close and connect the battery to the starter. If this is not happening, there is a break in the starting circuit. This includes   the  12v power to the ignition  switch, the ignition switch, all the wire and connections to the safety switches (clutch ,PTO, seat, brake) the safety switches themselves   and the solenoid switch. I would check the ignition  switch first and be sure you have 12v at the S(start)  lug when you hold the switch in the start position.  If you have 12v at the ignition  switch S lug, then check for 12v at the small lug on the solenoid  switch while holding the ignition  switch in the start position.  If you do not see 12v at the small lug on the solenoid  switch, one of the safety  switches is open or  there is a break in the connecting wires or terminals.

got it figured out finally.one fuse looked good but it was not.then the blue wire going to the solenoid was not getting power from the black box so i bypassed the box and hooked brown from the key switch to the blue to the solenoid and everything works fine.do not know whats going on in that box but everything is fine now.that onan runs smooth.thanks for all the help.
