wheeledhorseman 579 #1 Posted March 17, 2014 My first encounter with a 210-4 was one that I bought a couple of years back minus an engine just for parts. Dismantling it I discovered that these were quite chunky little LTs that included a rear pto to drive a grass collector and also featured a column gear shift and combined break & clutch pedal. Some of the parts came in handy for the A-800 resto turned custom I did i.e. the fender pan and seat arrangement in modified form. A year later another came up cheap and local to me so for those relatively new to the Euro section meet celebrity horse on arrival last May. This one had an engine but 'needed a new starter motor and ignition switch', oh and yes, those are a pile of bits from it on the seat just as it had been photographed when it appeared on epay and when I collected it. It cost me about £80 but this one had an engine and supposedly good transmission and also a deck with no holes in it so worth the cost for just a few of the parts. The aim was to see if I could get it going again at minimal cost or it too would be parted out. I discovered the reason that it had stopped running was no spark and that the electronic ignition module (aka igniter) had failed. Problem had become bigger than that though at the hands of PO and attempts made to fix it. The starter had been thumped at some point breaking one of the ceramic magnets inside jamming the motor up. As the starter wouldn't turn a new solenoid was fitted to no avail but as a result I got two good solenoids in the deal. I think at this point it was discovered that the starter had seized, they're pricey from Kawasaki so the tractor was up fo sale. Determined to put as little money into trying to get it going as possible I discovered that these starter motors work fine for a 10 hp engine with just three of the four magnets in place once you've cleared all of the ceramic shrapnel out. Having also found nothing wrong with the ignition switch it was a matter of investing in an igniter to find out if the engine was any good or not. An OEM Kawasaki igniter is also very pricey here in the UK, believe it or not about £90 but I managed to get one from Thailand for £30 which turned out to be by the OEM manufacturer Bosch. The tractor has sat in the shop all winter waiting to be seen to but as Spring has arrived I got it out this weekend and worked on it in the sun. Amazingly the tyres had all held air over the winter - bonus! Fitted the igniter and got it to run sort of with full choke and and a bit more i.e. my hand over the intake. Removing the carb discovered PO had obviously taken the carb off, torn two of the gaskets and simply reinstalled the carb. Made a couple of new gaskets from carboard as temporary measure and it would run on full choke then cut out. Discovered fuel flow from the tank had stopped as the little gauze filter above the fuel valve was squashed so removed it. Long story short got it running on the second day - it hunts at all but full revs and won't idle but apart from that the engine seems good so I'm guessing I need to do a full carb clean not just the main jet and I need a proper gasket set but the good news is that it lives and I took it for a drive round to try it out. Two things seemed strange i.e. getting used to the column shift and a single brake and clutch pedal on the right. So here it is 'Celebrity Horse' and it won't be parted out now - I seem to have grown curiously attached to it! The hood with headlamps intact is from the one I parted. This one has a readable id label so I'll enter it on the register Mark. It's moved out of the shop and into the barn which is a good thing in that I have a new arrival which I'll hopefully be picking up later this week - another that could go either way but this time a 'C'. (Can you guess what it is yet?) For those newish to the forum the 210-4 was originally owned from new by Davy Jones of 'Monkeys' fame before he moved to the US. I seem to be rapidly becoming a WH sanctury. Andy
